Angkor served as the historical capital of the magnificent Khmer Empire. Located within Siem Reap, it represents an exceptional destination to explore. Rich in stunning architectural designs, reflecting Khmer culture, and, of course, the breathtaking temples, Siem Reap is undoubtedly a destination of great significance when visiting this remarkable country.

During our residency in Singapore, I would frequently ponder potential travel destinations, with places like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap recurrently surfacing in our discussions.

In all honesty, it has always been the temples in Siem Reap that captivated my interest.

Perched slightly east of Bangkok, Thailand, and slightly west of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, Angkor is relatively straightforward to access, particularly if you are already exploring Siem Reap.

Indeed, the temples in Siem Reap are remarkably spectacular, and one should not overlook them.

Consequently, I wish to share some of my preferred temples in Siem Reap that merit a visit. While Angkor Wat is likely to be at the forefront of your list (and justifiably so), an abundance of additional temples await exploration! 🇰🇭

1.) Witness the sunrise at Angkor Wat

No visit to Siem Reap is complete without experiencing Angkor Wat. It is largely regarded as one of the finest temples in Siem Reap … and for good reason!

While you may encounter crowds during certain periods, being one of the world’s largest religious sites ensures that it does not feel overwhelmingly busy.

Even if you are not an early riser, visiting Angkor Wat at any time of the day will leave you in awe; this is an absolute must-see while in Siem Reap.

It is widely recognized as one of the most prominent examples of Khmer architecture globally and genuinely appears as beautiful as the pictures depict. As is customary for visits to religious sites, be sure to adhere to local customs regarding appropriate dress code while entering.

For an exceptional view of the sunset over Angkor Wat, make your way to Phnom Bakheng, where you can enjoy a splendid panorama of these exquisite temples in Siem Reap.

Additionally, if you seek a slightly different vantage point to appreciate Angkor Wat, consider visiting the outer enclosure’s west wall area.

2.) Explore the ruins of Ta Prohm

Originally referred to as Rajavihara, Ta Prohm was constructed an impressive 700 years ago, and it continues to exhibit one of the extraordinary temples of the Bayon style in Siem Reap.

Despite being in ruins, it stands majestically (even as some immense trees have begun to establish their dominance), presenting an opportunity to wander around the temple and appreciate the stunning bas-reliefs that adorn its walls.

It is not difficult to understand why this temple is so popular. To avoid the majority of the crowds, plan your visit later in the day.

3.) Visit the Bayon Temple

Designed for a Mahayana Buddhist King, the Bayon Temple is over 600-700 years old. Be sure to inspect some of the upper terraces, where many exquisite stone faces have been elegantly carved, as they are truly not to be missed.

While touring the site, ensure you closely observe the outer walls and gallery, as you’ll discover a narrative expressed through the intricate stone carvings present.

Take note of the carving depicting a gigantic fish devouring a deer adorning the walls of the western gallery. It serves as a striking sight within one of the most renowned temples in Siem Reap.

4.) Observe the Garuda sculptures of Preah Khan

Constructed in the 12th century, Preah Khan is a stunning temple demanding exploration.

The temple’s outer walls feature over 70 Garuda, a mythical creature revered for their protective attributes.

Meander through the temple’s inner sanctum to discover the House of Fire that features prominently in several temples.

5.) Discover the Citadel of Beauty, Banteay Srei

Dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, Banteay Srei is nearly 1,000 years old.

Situated slightly further from the central cluster of temples, Banteay Srei is approximately 25 km (18 miles) from the main area.

Once known as Tribhuvanamaheśvara, the site later became recognized as Banteay Srei, translating loosely to the ‘Citadel of Beauty’.

After being ‘lost’ for several centuries, Banteay Srei was rediscovered in the early 20th century. It is indeed a remarkable temple worth visiting.

6.) Appreciate the elegant temple of Pre Rup

Nearly 1,000 years old, Pre Rup is a noteworthy temple believed to have been utilized for historical funerals and ceremonial proceedings.

This adds significant importance to the site for the Cambodian people.

Located just south of East Baray, the temple offers a delightful vista.

Ensure to investigate the terminal pyramid, marvel at the central tower, and explore the central Prasat. The beauty is truly remarkable.

7.) Examine the sacred tree at Ta Som

Despite its small size, Ta Som is a temple that should not be overlooked. This intimate, single shrine has been claimed by a sacred fig tree, which has made it its home.

Enter from the east and appreciate the various carvings and gateways leading to the temple.

8.) Investigate the Hindu and Buddhist temple, Phnom Bakheng

Constructed well over 1,000 years ago, Phnom Bakheng is a stunning temple in Siem Reap that deserves your attention.

While many visitors come here to witness the sunrise over Angkor Wat, it’s a breathtaking site to explore in its own right. The temple symbolizes Mount Meru, representing the center of all physical and spiritual universes.

Be sure to spend time investigating the central tower of the temple, as well.

9.) Stroll around Baphuon

Located within the ancient city of Angkor Thom, Baphuon is a striking temple-mountain that you must experience.

Although in a state of disrepair, the temple remains worthwhile to explore. Since being made safe for visitors, ensure you venture inside to appreciate the inner beauty of the temple structure.

10.) Locate the beautiful Banteay Samré

Banteay Samré is one of the exquisite Hindu temples in Siem Reap. Its architectural style closely resembles that of Angkor Wat, and it has been beautifully restored in the mid-20th century.

Remember to stroll along the extended walkway leading to the temple and allocate time to explore the central tower. Uniquely, the temple tends to be considerably less crowded compared to Angkor Wat, allowing you some peaceful moments to immerse in its beauty.

11.) Visit the smaller Prasat Kravan Temple

Located south of Srah Srang in Angkor, Prasat Kravan is a smaller temple constructed for the Hindu deity Vishnu, just shy of 1,000 years ago.

Ensure to take a moment to admire the exquisite bas-relief carvings that embellish this charming temple in Siem Reap.
