Discover the Best Beaches in Texas
Texas is an amazing state in the United States to visit. With historic cities like San Antonio, vibrant cities like Austin, and epic spots in Houston and Dallas, it has something for everyone. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that Texas is all about its cities! There are a plethora of the best beaches in Texas dotted across its coastline that you cannot miss.
Over the years, we’ve explored some of the best places in Texas during road trips, and we’ve always thoroughly enjoyed our visits.
To help you maximize your time and avoid research fatigue, I’m delighted to share a few coastal gems in Texas you won’t want to miss.
Have an amazing time visiting Texas!
1.) Boca Chica Beach
Boca Chica Beach is perfect for a laid-back trip to the Gulf Coast of Texas. Nestled within Brazos Island State Park, it’s one of the best beaches in Texas to visit, offering something extra!
Just shy of Boca Chica Beach is the SpaceX Launch Facility, which is quite the sight. Remember, Boca Chica Beach (including Del Mar Beach) might be relatively quiet in terms of facilities. You won’t find piers, beach bars, or restaurants nearby. That being said, this long stretch of sand is worth visiting if you seek tranquility for picnics.
If you’re an early riser, Boca Chica Beach is also one of the best places to catch the sunrise.
2.) Padre Island National Seashore
Located near Corpus Christi, Padre Island National Seashore is a stunning, long ‘spit’ of an island that’s simply beautiful to visit in Texas.
This area is ideal for kayaking, swimming, and windsurfing—just be cautious, as the waves and currents can be intense. Moreover, there is a visitor center that’s worth checking out for local conditions and learning about wildlife, including conservation efforts during public sea turtle hatchling releases.
If you feel like taking a stroll, head on the Grasslands Nature Trail that winds across Padre Island.
Conversely, if you prefer staying in Corpus Christi, visit McGee Beach right in the city.
3.) Bolivar Beach
Situated on the Bolivar Peninsula, Bolivar Beach (and Crystal Beach) stretches for an impressive seven miles, making it one of the best beaches in Texas, conveniently close to Houston. This location is perfect for a long afternoon escape.
Known locally for its fishing opportunities, the area around Crystal Beach features a myriad of fresh seafood options at nearby restaurants. We particularly enjoyed the informal Jose’s Cantina, where they serve up an incredible seafood platter.
Thanks to its large size, Bolivar Beach and Crystal Beach tend to be less crowded than other spots in Texas, making it an ideal location for a more relaxed beach experience.
4.) Surfside Beach
Located less than an hour’s drive from Houston, Surfside Beach provides a peaceful escape from city life.
Located southwest of Galveston, Surfside Beach boasts numerous activities, making it an excellent spot for friends and family. It is often cited as one of the cleanest beaches in Texas—an incredible perk!
If you plan to spend the entire day, make sure to stop by Sharkies On The Beach for delicious cocktails in a laid-back atmosphere. Alternatively, for a casual meal on the beach, check out the Beach Front Deck Bar and Grill for their scrumptious catfish!
5.) Rockport Beach
Extending around 1 km long, Rockport Beach is another gem when traveling between Corpus Christi and Houston.
Designated as a Blue Wave Beach, Rockport Beach stands out for its beauty and family-friendly atmosphere. Its crescent-shaped stretch of sand is popular among families, making it easy to include in your travels without missing Mustang Island and Padre Island.
Additionally, the shallow and calm waters at Rockport Beach keep it protected from swells, making it an ideal destination for families with children.
6.) South Padre Island
Another family-friendly beach in Texas is South Padre Island. Located adjacent to the Mexican border, it’s arguably the southernmost beach you can visit in Texas.
While here, stroll along the lengthy beach or engage in activities such as kiteboarding, jet skiing, kitesurfing, and windsurfing. Just remember to heed local expert advice and never venture out in rough conditions.
A favorite spot of mine is around Isla Blanca Beach, not only because it’s blissful but also due to the ample parking available (a real bonus on weekends).
Feeling hungry? Try Blackbeards for their fried shrimp or takeout; it’s a casual and tasty choice.
7.) Sea Rim State Park
Sea Rim State Park is ideal for wildlife enthusiasts and is considered one of the best areas and beaches in Texas for a long weekend stay.
Beyond just being a beach, Sea Rim State Park offers excellent birdwatching and paddleboarding opportunities. For breathtaking views of the park, don’t miss the Gambusia Nature Trail boardwalk.
8.) Galveston Beach
Just shy of Galveston, Galveston Beach is among the more popular yet still one of the best beaches in Texas to visit. It is easily accessible by car, making it a convenient choice.
The beach itself is what it’s all about, providing numerous restaurants and beachfront areas to enjoy. For a slightly quieter spot, consider heading to Stewart Beach, though you won’t find many food options here.
Don’t forget to visit the Pleasure Pier. You will scream on some of these exhilarating rides!
9.) Port Aransas Beach
You can’t go wrong with visiting Port Aransas for its beautiful beaches. It’s a relaxed spot and part of Mustang Island, ensuring a blend of busier and quieter beach areas.
Even though Corpus Christi is nearby, you won’t see signs of it once you reach the beach.
10.) Magnolia Beach Park
Magnolia Beach Park is one of the most peaceful beaches in Texas that offers a serene experience. Here, you can unwind and explore the beautiful protected coastline, perfect for all ages.
The charm of Magnolia Beach lies in its tranquility, which makes it less crowded than many other locations. Additionally, nearby, you can find Indianola Beach Park for a more extensive stretch of sand.
11.) Mustang Island State Park
Located on the quieter part of the island away from Port Aransas Beach, Mustang Island State Park is a breathtaking spot in Texas.
Besides swimming and sunbathing, Mustang Island offers a wide array of exciting activities to enjoy for a relaxing day on the coast.
Once here, explore paddling trails, go birdwatching, and more. This beach is also dog-friendly, which is fantastic if you’re traveling with your furry friend. Just remember to keep them leashed to respect other visitors.
One convenient way to access the beaches at Mustang Island State Park is via access road two, which will lead you directly onto the beach in no time.
