Explore Indiana: A Comprehensive Guide
With its shores along Lake Michigan, Indiana presents an ideal stop on a road trip through the United States. The state offers a diverse range of attractions, making it a broad and enriching destination. Notably, numerous exceptional sites are scattered across Indiana, providing visitors plenty of opportunities to discover hidden gems, even if they don’t travel along the northern coastline.
In addition to vibrant cities such as Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Indiana boasts picturesque natural spaces. While exploring urban landscapes, one can easily venture into scenic areas like Indiana Dunes National Park and many others, enhancing the overall travel experience.
To ensure a fulfilling journey in Indiana, I will outline my top recommendations that are essential for your itinerary. Prepare for a memorable adventure while exploring this captivating state.
1.) Cataract Falls
Cataract Falls may not hold the title for the tallest waterfall in Indiana—an honor which belongs to Williamsport Falls—but its beauty and the surrounding state park make it a must-visit location.
Accessing Cataract Falls by vehicle is straightforward, with convenient parking available adjacent to the falls. This makes it an excellent choice for a quick stop while exploring some of Indiana’s most remarkable locations. A visit to the upper falls is highly recommended, especially if you desire a break from driving.
Once at the site, explore Little Sisters Falls, Upper Cataract Falls, and Lower Cataract Falls. While these falls might not be the highest, the surrounding trails offer stunning scenery.
2.) Indianapolis
As the most frequented city in Indiana, Indianapolis is an excellent choice for visitors seeking a refreshing urban experience while traversing the state. A two-night stay is sufficient to gain a solid perspective of the city and enjoy its many attractions.
While in the city, prioritize a visit to the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art. Conveniently located at the entrance to White River State Park, the museum features an impressive array of artwork primarily curated by Harrison Eiteljorg.
Next, make your way to the renowned Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Time your visit accordingly to attend a race or explore the site. While the museum may currently be undergoing renovations (confirm its status prior to visiting), the track tour is particularly worthwhile.
When hunger strikes, consider dining at Shapiro’s Delicatessen. This unpretentious establishment has been a staple in Indianapolis for decades, serving up an exceptional Pastrami Sandwich. Ensure you arrive with an appetite, as the portions are substantial.
Lastly, do not miss the chance to stroll along the Indianapolis Canal Walk. Centrally located within the city, the canal walk also offers opportunities to rent paddleboards on warm days.
3.) Bloomington
Bloomington serves as an ideal stopping point for travelers heading south from Indianapolis. This vibrant city is rich in attractions, offering numerous activities that can easily fill a night or two in the downtown area.
During your visit, consider attending a performance at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Esteemed for showcasing the finest local talent, the theater presents a variety of performances throughout the year. Ensure to obtain tickets in advance for popular shows to avoid disappointment.
Subsequently, make your way to the Eskenazi Museum of Art, situated within Indiana University and established in 1941. The museum boasts an impressive collection of around 48,000 art pieces, featuring works by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Monet, Pollock, alongside various African artifacts. The architectural beauty of the building is also noteworthy.
Finally, be sure to stop by the Runcible Spoon for a delightful brunch experience. Their corned beef hash is exceptional, and the homemade pies are equally delicious.
4.) Nappanee
Nappanee is a small city situated south of Elkhart and represents a convenient respite as you travel south toward Indianapolis.
This city showcases numerous Amish influences, along with various historical and noteworthy locations, including the Round Barn, Coppes Commons, the Nappanee Center, Amish Acres, and Antiques on the Squares.
While there, be sure to visit Dutch Village Restaurant. Their oversized tenderloin sandwiches and homemade coleslaw are exceptional.
It’s important to note that Nappanee tends to be a tranquil and quiet location, making visits brief—most won’t require more than 30 minutes, yet it’s an easy and enjoyable stop on your journey.
5.) Lafayette
Located along the primary route from Indianapolis to Chicago (Illinois), Lafayette offers much more than just a city.
For food enthusiasts, Lafayette is home to some of the finest culinary experiences within Indiana. Its renowned Mary Lou Donuts are famously fluffy, featuring delightful homemade icing. Additionally, the Triple XXX Family Restaurant stands out as a charmingly retro establishment known for its appetizing ‘Bert burger’.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Haan Museum of Indiana Art, which offers insight into the works of Indiana’s talented artists, set within a historical building that has stood for over a century. An additional highlight is Fort Ouiatenon, a wooden replica of what was constructed by French colonists centuries ago.
Finally, while discussing Lafayette’s appeal beyond the urban experience, the surrounding natural beauty is equally captivating. The Celery Bog Nature Area is ideal for scenic walks, and Prophetstown State Park offers an excellent escape for outdoor enthusiasts.
6.) Carmel
Carmel lives up to its delightful name and is conveniently located just outside Indianapolis, making it easily accessible.
For a unique experience, visit the Museum of Miniatures, which showcases an eccentric yet charming collection. While there, be sure to dine at Bub’s Burgers, famous for their enormous and utterly delicious ‘Big Ugly burger’. Be warned, this may be a challenge to finish solo.
7.) Indiana Dunes National Park
Nestled along the shores of Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes National Park is among the premier sites to explore in Indiana along the northern coastline. It is truly breathtaking and offers visitors the opportunity to spend an entire afternoon (or more) immersed within its natural beauty.
For a refreshing swim during the summer, head to West Beach within the park. It features a lovely sandy area perfect for sunbathing and swimming. Moreover, don’t overlook the numerous trails and boardwalks meandering throughout the national park, as they provide picturesque views and experiences.
8.) Fort Wayne
Fort Wayne is an excellent overnight stop, offering a perfect balance between urban exploration and relaxation within the city.
While there, be sure to visit Lindenwood Nature Preserve. Featuring numerous boardwalks, this tranquil spot provides a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city. Additionally, do not miss Fort Wayne’s Museum of Art, which showcases an impressive collection of modern art, including exhibitions of Americana and classic toys.
Moreover, be sure to indulge in a meal at Fort Wayne’s Famous Coney Island—a delightful spot famous for its hot dogs and baked beans. Contrarily to perhaps common assumptions, it is not located in Coney Island itself!
9.) Columbia City
Columbia City stands out primarily as a stopping point rather than a major destination. This observation is not intended as a critique but reflects its nature as a place best suited for brief visits.
While in Columbia City, take a walk around the central county court area, where an array of local dining establishments and cafés are situated. For a delightful brunch, consider Pickles Cafe, well-known for its delectable French toast.
10.) Kokomo
Kokomo ranks among my favorite smaller cities in Indiana. It is compact enough to explore in a day (or even an afternoon) while sufficiently expansive to savor a longer stay.
For a leisurely day, visit Highland Park, which offers a sprawling and picturesque environment, perfect for a warm summer day. Additionally, do not forget to check out the Seiberling Mansion, which serves as a museum displaying its historical relevance. This grand structure, dating back to the 1800s, is beautifully maintained and enriches the visitor experience.
To enjoy some of the best tacos in Indiana, venture to 3 Amigos Mexican Grill. They are also renowned for their exceptional enchiladas.
11.) South Bend
Situated not far from the border with Michigan, South Bend, along with its neighbor Notre Dame, is an excellent destination for an overnight stay while in Indiana. This vibrant city is full of excitement and activities.
Once you arrive in South Bend, a visit to the Studebaker National Museum is highly recommended. This intriguing location presents a fascinating glimpse into automotive history; even those uninterested in cars are likely to find the exhibits captivating.
Additionally, make sure to check out Frankie’s BBQ—hailed as one of the finest barbecue restaurants in Indiana (a valuable secret!). Its casual atmosphere complements their delicious ribs, paired with a slightly tangy sauce. The mini-tips and catfish are wonderful options as well.
