Our experience in the captivating Basque Country began in the bustling urban center of Bilbao before we transitioned to San Sebastian, where the experience proved to be extraordinary.
This guide is designed to assist you in planning an enriching visit to Gipuzkoa, specifically highlighting notable activities to indulge in while in San Sebastian.
Ensure that you arrive with a hearty appetite, as you will find it difficult to resist the temptation of Pintxos and Kalimotxos, a unique blend of red wine and cola that is local to the region.
1.) Old Town (Parte Vieja)
Located between Alameda del Boulevard and the base of Monte Urgull, San Sebastian’s Old Town showcases a variety of beautiful Basque architecture, excellent restaurant options for Pintxos, and an array of charming alleys and plazas to wander through.
My personal approach is to enjoy culinary delights while exploring the city, seamlessly blending the two experiences in San Sebastian. Each Pintxos bar becomes a delightful stop while you leisurely navigate the area.
For an enhanced experience, consider coupled culinary excursions that introduce you to some of the finest Pintxos in San Sebastian.
This activity also complements the exploration of the city on foot. Navigating the cobblestone pathways offers a more immersive experience than driving or utilizing other forms of transportation.
While traversing through the Old Town, notable sites include the bustling Pescaderia (Fish Market), the lively Plaza de la Constitución, and the stunning municipal library showcasing elegant neoclassical design.
Furthermore, only a short distance from the Plaza de la Constitución stands the historic Iglesia de San Vicente, renowned as the oldest church in San Sebastian. Completed in the 16th century, its Gothic allure paired with an intricately carved retablo, dating back to the late 1500s, makes a visit worthwhile.
2.) Buen Pastor Cathedral
Recognized as San Sebastian’s largest church, the Buen Pastor Cathedral is a striking feature and significant landmark within the city, with a monumental tower standing at 75 meters high.

Accessing the island is straightforward, as various boat tours will ferry you directly to Santa Clara. It’s a delightful way to explore the island’s beauty, particularly during the summer months.
Upon arrival, you can enjoy the spectacular views and discover why Isla de Santa Clara has been designated as a site of Historical National Interest.
The island is dotted with serene pools ideal for cooling off, and equipped picnic areas, restaurants, and cafes provide a wonderful respite from the city’s hustle.
Additionally, a delightful walk to the island’s lighthouse presents one of the prime activities in San Sebastian during a warm day.
4.) La Concha Beach
La Concha Beach, regarded as the Summer Capital of Europe since the time of Queen Regent Maria Cristina, consistently ranks among the most breathtaking beaches in the continent.

6.) Museo de San Telmo

7.) Miramar Royal Palace
With its distinct English Tudor-style architecture, the Miramar Royal Palace was designed by the eminent English architect, Selden Wornum.
This magnificent site has historically served as a summer residence for numerous Spanish royal families and continues to be a popular destination.
Although the palace itself does not conduct guided tours and is not open to the public, visitors are welcome to enjoy the well-maintained gardens for a leisurely picnic.
After your visit, be sure to return to the historical core of San Sebastian for a well-deserved glass of wine paired with Pintxos.

8.) Monte Urgull
Monte Urgull has long served as a defining feature of San Sebastian’s landscape. When you visit, take the opportunity to trek to the summit, where you can explore the historic 12th-century Mota Castle, which includes a quaint museum and a noteworthy 39-foot statue of the Sacred Heart built in the 1950s. It is indeed worth the visit.
Access can be initiated from the Old Town, with trails originating from either the Plaza de Zutoaga or the aquarium. The tranquil ascent is primarily shaded and well-maintained.
Adjacent to the ruins atop Monte Urgull lies the homely café, Polbariña, which serves delightful ice cream.
9.) Ondarreta Beach (Playa de Ondarreta)
Situated a stone’s throw from Miramar Royal Palace, Ondarreta Beach is one of the ideal locations in San Sebastian for a leisurely day by the sea.
During the summer months, it serves as an excellent spot for sunbathing on the sand.
With Monte Igueldo framing the shoreline, the beach offers a stunning view that should not be overlooked. Even during winter, the area remains suitable for a delightful stroll.
Also, don’t miss out on visiting Zurriola Beach, another great location for relaxation by the shore.
10.) Basilica de Santa Maria del Coro
Located in the center of the Old Town, the Basilica de Santa Maria del Coro features a stunning Baroque design from the 18th century, reminiscent of churches found in Sicily, particularly those in Noto.
Its exterior boasts an impressive Churrigueresco façade, and the interior features remarkable Gothic vaults that contribute to its unique character.
11.) Monte Igueldo
Situated to the west of San Sebastian, Monte Igueldo is an essential natural landmark not to be missed.
Famous for many reasons, the vintage funicular is particularly charming. The funicular, established in 1912 and still operational, offers the most thrilling means of reaching the summit of Monte Igueldo.
The ascent reveals stunning 360-degree views of San Sebastian along with the coastline of the Basque Country.
At the pinnacle, you will find a quaint amusement park featuring vintage rides, including carousels and a nostalgic wooden roller coaster.
Additionally, the El Torreon Tower adjacent to the park and the well-known Hotel Mercure San Sebastian Monte Igueldo are worth your attention.
