Numerous destinations throughout Europe remain relatively obscure, not due to their popularity or aesthetic value, but rather their increasing familiarity. Corfu epitomizes this sentiment, especially as it boasts a variety of attractions spread across the island.
Quite frankly, this captivating Greek island should undoubtedly feature on your travel itinerary.
1.) Gorge at Agni Bay
Situated on the northeast coast of the island, Agni Bay is a hidden treasure worth exploring. This historic fishing village embodies the essence of island life. Revel in the picturesque coastline, enjoy a swim in the warm waters, and relax at a seafront taverna serving mouthwatering Corfiot cuisine. Seafood lovers will certainly appreciate this charming bay.
For a delightful meal, visit Nikolas’ Taverna; it will not disappoint. This is indeed one of the most pleasant experiences in Corfu for those seeking a laid-back day.
2.) See the Dramatic Cape Drastis
Cape Drastis represents one of Corfu Island’s most northerly points and is a site that should not be overlooked.
Though there may be occasional variations regarding the accessibility of Cape Drastis, summer months generally provide the most convenient access.
3.) Explore the Old Town of Corfu (Kerkyra)
A visit to Corfu would be incomplete without a stroll through the charming Corfu Town (more akin to a small town in reality).
Ensure you explore the UNESCO World Heritage site that comprises the old town and tries to catch a glimpse of the historical Venetian architecture that still stands tall.
4.) Wander Around Vlacherna Monastery
Vlacherna Monastery, one of the most recognizable landmarks on Corfu, is situated on a small island accessible by a narrow walkway over the water. It is a beautiful location to visit, and the monastery welcomes visitors year-round.
5.) See St. George’s Church, Kerkyra
This church, resembling a Doric temple, was constructed by the British during the 19th century. Located within the Old Fortress of Kerkyra, it is a must-see. Various concerts are occasionally held inside, so checking the schedule during your stay is advisable.
6.) Secure a Proposal at Canal d’Amour
Canal d’Amour, located just west of Sidari town, is often bustling with visitors. Local folklore suggests that couples who swim through the channel are destined to marry soon, making it a perfect location for romantic moments.
7.) Gorge on Local Food
Greece is celebrated for its fresh, delectable dishes, and Corfu is no exception. Expect to find a diverse array of Corfiot specialties, with lamb being particularly popular.
Don’t miss trying Sykomaïtha, a delicious fig-based cake that should be on every food lover’s list.
8.) Watch the Sunset at Loggas Beach
Renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, Loggas Beach is an ideal location to unwind and marvel at nature while enjoying the evening sky.
You can either descend to the beach or relax at a clifftop restaurant while sipping a frappe or ouzo.
9) Find Corfu’s Best Beach at Porto Timoni
If there’s only one destination you choose to visit in Corfu, make it Porto Timoni, my personal favorite beach and coastline on the island.
When you arrive by car, park in the village (or just outside) and enjoy a 20-minute hike down to the beach itself.
10.) Discover the Royal Achilleion Palace
Situated in Gastouri, Achilleion Palace was originally built for Austrian royalty. It is now open for exploration, allowing all visitors to admire this stunning building.
Take the time to tour the interior of this remarkable site; it is undoubtedly one of the top attractions in Corfu for history enthusiasts.
11.) Palaiokastritsa
Located on the northwestern part of Corfu, Palaiokastritsa is a quaint village believed to be the mythological location of Scheria, the last stop of Odysseus before returning home.
Be sure to visit the 1200s monastery and enjoy some relaxation at the main beach. It is a wonderful spot for a peaceful morning under the sun.
