With centuries of history, an abundance of culinary delights, and a stunning center, Bari is an ideal location. In truth, there are countless incredible things to do in Bari that are spread out across the city.
These characteristics make it perfect for a long weekend getaway or an excellent launching point for your journey through the best spots in Puglia.
Bari serves as the ideal starting point to explore the captivating Puglia region due to its conveniently located airport. We combined our trip to Bari with a road trip around Puglia and a visit to the iconic city of Matera. Spending a few days in Bari is certainly worthwhile.

1.) Bari Vecchia
Bari Vecchia, the most historic part of the city, is among the best attractions in Bari. Its quaint narrow streets, lovely piazzas, and beautiful cobblestones create a picturesque atmosphere perfect for exploring.
I often cringe to suggest getting lost in the city’s streets (since no one truly enjoys it), but wandering through Bari Vecchia is delightful, and you may inadvertently find yourself navigating through the tiny alleys.
Truth be told, your chances of getting lost are high with the maze-like streets, but don’t worry—it adds to the adventure, just like in Venice, where I always get lost.
When driving, you can typically find parking along the promenade, just before you enter the old town. If space is tight, an alternative parking area is conveniently located a short distance from the walls of Bari Vecchia.
Once you’re in, don’t miss the San Sabino Cathedral and the di Sant’Antonio, which were constructed in the 16th century as a protective measure for Bari.
And be sure to stop at one of the numerous tasty trattorias dotting the streets. We particularly enjoyed Osteria Le Arpie, an informal eatery serving delicious Orecchiette pasta, a local specialty of Bari.
2.) San Sabino Cathedral
San Sabino Cathedral is a must-visit landmark located in the heart of historic Bari. This impressive church is one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical architecture in the region and merits exploration while you’re in the city.
Originally constructed in the 1100s, this stunning Baroque-style church, especially notable in the crypt, offers a remarkable experience in the heart of Bari.
While inside, be sure to visit the crypts, where Madonna Odegitria is venerated— this is truly a highlight for those interested in Italian history.
Not far from the cathedral (about an 8-minute stroll) is Antica Gelateria Gentile, known for some of the best gelatos in Bari. While unassuming from the outside, the flavors are exceptional!
3.) Lungomare Nazario Sauro
Lungomare Nazario Sauro, the coastal road of the ‘newer’ Bari, is a scenic promenade that’s perfect for a morning or evening stroll. While it’s ideal for catching sunrises (though I prefer sunsets), this area offers stunning views during twilight hours as the sun casts beautiful orange hues across the horizon.
If you’re searching for a beach within the city of Bari, Lido San Francesco is among the most popular. It’s an excellent option if you are not venturing along the breathtaking coastline of Puglia.
Note that weekends can be bustling with activity, so if you’re looking for a quieter experience, plan accordingly.
For a bit more adventure, consider driving to Parco Nationale Alta Murgia. Here, you’ll experience Castel del Monte, a historical citadel located just outside Bari that boasts centuries of rich history.
4.) Teatro Petruzzelli
If possible, arrange to watch an orchestra at Teatro Petruzzelli. This venue showcases some of the best performances in Bari and is perfect for those looking to experience world-class theatre or classical music.
If unable to attend a show, consider taking a tour of Teatro Petruzzelli; it is an enriching experience.
If that doesn’t sound appealing, a day trip to explore the ancient ruins of Egnazia could be a great alternative.
Dating back to the 8th century BC, these ruins allow you to delve into the historical lifestyle of the Messapii people and discover how life once unfolded in this region of Italy.
The experience is worthwhile and easily paired with a visit to Monopoli, another beautiful town nearby.
5.) Castello Svevo
Castello Svevo is yet another iconic castle available for exploration among the many castles throughout Italy.

If you’re up for it, you can easily sail the Puglian coast right from Bari with a highly recommended half-day tour departing the city.
After boarding your vessel at the marina, you’ll sail over the exquisite waters around Bari and may even get a chance to swim in the breathtaking bays during the warmer months.
For the adventurous types, the skipper might guide you so you can sail the boat yourself, making it a fun and memorable experience.
8.) Bari Museum
Situated in a historic palace, this small museum in Bari provides a great opportunity to explore the region’s history.
Filled with various paintings and artifacts, it’s best suited for a quick visit of around 20-30 minutes.
However, don’t expect a grand hall or extensive collection; this intimate setting offers a cozy glimpse into the past.
9.) Archeological Museum of Bari
Yes, another museum! This area of Puglia is rich in captivating history that should not be overlooked. With free entry, you can stroll through restored exhibits detailing life in ancient times.
A perfect respite when the midday sun gets too intense!
10.) Try Orecchiette Pasta
As previously mentioned, you can’t leave Bari without trying Orecchiette pasta. To get an in-depth look at its history (and enjoy the dish), consider joining a local tour that specializes in pasta-making in Bari.
During the tour, you’ll meander through the cobbled lanes of Old Bari, engaging in the craft of making your own Orecchiette, paired with a glass of local Puglian wine. It’s an engaging experience—not to be missed!
