Having visited Alicante and its surroundings multiple times throughout the years, I can attest that the city offers much more than just its accessible airport. Upon arrival, you will discover myriad attractions. In fact, I would argue that it ranks among the top cities in Spain to explore when considering a trip to the southern region of Spain.
To facilitate your exploration of Alicante, I am pleased to present some of the essential locations you should not overlook. This will enable you to concentrate on enjoying your visit without the burden of extensive planning.
1.) Castillo de Santa Bárbara
A visit to Alicante would be incomplete without a stop at Castillo de Santa Barbara. This historic fortress, which dates back to the 8th century, majestically overlooks Alicante from its elevated position. It is a remarkable site to explore, offering an opportunity to traverse its grounds and delve into over 1,000 years of history.
While here, be sure to walk along the castle walls and admire the panoramic views of the Mediterranean. The scenery is truly breathtaking.
Entry fees are modest, typically a few euros, and a visit to Castillo de Santa Barbara will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes. It is advisable to wear comfortable footwear and apply sunscreen, as the cobblestone paths can be uneven, and the sun is particularly intense during midday.
2.) Explanada de España
Explanada de España is a beautiful promenade in Alicante that is ideal for leisurely strolls during the afternoon and evening, providing scenic views along the waterfront.
This location can be easily accessed after visiting Castillo de Santa Barbara as they are in proximity to each other—perfect for a delightful walk around the city.
While exploring, take your time to wander along the waterfront, check out the various shops and cafes along the promenade, and simply unwind. Additionally, consider dining at Terre for a delicious experience with their acclaimed tuna dish. Expect to spend around 80-100 euros for a meal, making this an excellent dinner choice.
3.) Santa Cruz (Old Town)
Situated just below the castle, Santa Cruz is an excellent location to immerse oneself in the old town atmosphere of Alicante. This charming area features a labyrinth of narrow alleys filled with an array of restaurants and cafes, providing a delightful alternative to the waterfront.
While in the Santa Cruz area, you may also want to visit the Contemporary Art Museum of Alicante (MACA), which showcases a wealth of permanent and temporary exhibits from renowned artists around the world. We found visiting to be a worthwhile 45-minute experience.

4.) MARQ Archaeological Museum of Alicante
For those interested in learning about the region’s historical significance, a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Alicante is a must. This institution highlights the extensive history of the area spanning the last 100,000 years.
The museum’s exhibitions encompass various geological and cultural epochs, from prehistoric times through to the medieval period, offering fascinating insights into the past.
Afterward, consider a delightful roundtrip boat tour to the iconic Tabarca Island. This excursion provides an excellent opportunity to witness the captivating beauty of one of southern Spain’s most striking islands, including its quaint village.
5.) Mercado Central de Alicante
Not far from the streets of Santa Cruz, Mercado Central de Alicante (Alicante Market) is a highly recommended destination for food enthusiasts. Within this historic market, various vendors and shops offer everything from tapas to fresh produce and wines. Allocate approximately 30-45 minutes for a thorough exploration of this vibrant locale.
If your schedule allows, partake in an exceptional food tour of the city that presents an overview of Alicante’s culinary heritage. It is advisable to arrange your reservations in advance, particularly during peak seasons, as spots tend to fill quickly.
6.) Guadalest Valley
If you seek to escape the urban environment of Alicante, Guadalest Valley presents an exquisite option for a day trip or overnight stay.
Featuring scenic hiking trails and hilltop castles, this destination is renowned for its stunning turquoise lake bordered by mountains. There are also numerous restaurants giving visitors an opportunity to savor local cuisine while enjoying breathtaking views.
For a delightful lunch while discovering Guadalest Valley, consider dining at Venta La Montaña, noted for its delicious baked olleta de blat.
7.) Playa del Postiguet
If you are in the mood for a beach day during your visit to Alicante, Playa del Postiguet is an excellent choice. It is located conveniently at the base of Castillo de Santa Barbara, making it easily accessible from the city center.
Be aware that Playa del Postiguet can become crowded during the peak summer months; if you prefer a more peaceful experience, consider visiting beaches outside of the urban area.
Afterward, you might enjoy a catamaran cruise that showcases the shoreline, typically scheduled for the late afternoon, offering stunning views and opportunities for snorkeling.
8.) Basilica of St Mary (Basilica de Santa María)
The Basilica of St Mary, constructed under the rule of the Catholic monarchs, is a significant historical site in Alicante. Visiting this church provides an enriching experience, highlighting the city’s longstanding architectural legacy.
Although an entry fee applies, the investment is worthwhile to witness one of the oldest religious edifices in Alicante.
It is important to note that the site was established upon the remnants of a former mosque, and its architecture reflects the Valencian Gothic style. Allocate approximately 30 minutes for a leisurely exploration of this significant location.
9.) Cabo de las Huertas
Located on the northwest coast of Alicante, Cabo de las Huertas merits a visit for a few hours.
Renowned for its picturesque beaches and secluded coves, such as La Calita Playa and Cala de la Palmera, this area is stunningly beautiful. For those seeking more accessible beach options, Playa de las Huertas is a viable choice.

10.) Tabarca
As previously mentioned, you can easily arrange a roundtrip boat tour of Tabarca Island departing from Alicante. This small inhabited island presents a unique opportunity to explore its charming attributes.
