Summary of 2023 Summer Travel Trends
Meaningful Travel Experiences
American travelers are in search of a different kind of adventure this summer, heading outside of the country for more meaningful experiences. Intrepid Travel revealed the top trips Americans have booked for summer 2023, with Iceland and Morocco topping the list.
Top Booked Trips
“This is a historic summer for tourism, and American travelers are looking to do something different, get out of their comfort zone, and have genuine experiences,” said Matt Berna, president and general manager of Intrepid Travel. “They are gravitating toward trips that are active and immersive in culture while giving back to local communities.”
The Australia-based travel company is known for its mindfully curated itineraries. This summer, its 8-day Iceland Discovery, which loops around the entire island nation, has been the most booked by U.S. travelers. This trip covers iconic locations like Reykjavik and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, while also venturing into places like the East Fjords and the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
Moreover, the 5-day Iceland Express itinerary is notably popular as well, showcasing key highlights from the capital to Jökulsárlón.
Berna expressed that travelers are drawn to Iceland for its “mysterious and ethereal nature characterized by glaciers, waterfalls, geothermal springs, and the breathtaking aurora borealis.” On a personal visit, he was captivated by the “nature’s wonders and the vibrant culture of its people, who are known for their unique style and friendliness.”
The second most booked trip this summer is the 13-day Morocco Uncovered, which encompasses all the highlights of North Africa, starting in Casablanca. Additionally, the 15-day Best of Morocco itinerary, which includes a camel ride into a Sahara Desert camp, ranks as the 10th most popular trip.
Exploring Europe and Beyond
Furthermore, popular European destinations are evident in the travel trends. Four 8-day itineraries stand out: Athens to Santorini in Greece, Rome to Amalfi in Italy, Highlights of Scotland, and the physically demanding Hike the Tour du Mont Blanc.
In addition, travelers are exploring regions beyond Europe. Berna notes a significant trend toward tours booked to South America, Southeast Asia, and even North Africa, including Jordan and Egypt. Overall, data from Intrepid Travel indicates that Americans are twice as likely this year to take an international flight compared to last year. This trend suggests a readiness to embrace new adventures rather than wait.
As Berna highlighted, “While the classic countries are popular for a reason, it’s often the quirkier, eyebrow-raising adventures Americans are seeking.”
