Summary
Where To Stay In Nusa Penida
Tembeling Beach And Forest
Tembeling beach is a hidden gem located at the base of a secluded ravine surrounded by lush jungle. To reach this tranquil spot, visitors must navigate a steep descent that is not accessible by car. You can either trek down on foot or opt for a local motorbike ride on the narrow and rocky trail.
The friendly locals often offer motorbike rides down and back for a nominal fee of about 50k IDR (~$3) per person. However, attempting to ride a motorbike along this challenging trail is not advisable unless you are confident in your skills, as it is extremely steep and rocky, leaving little room for error. A better hiking path is anticipated in the future.
Consequently, hiking remains the only option for accessing the beach, which can take up to an hour each way. Prepare yourself for a steep climb back and ensure to carry enough water to stay hydrated!
Tembeling Natural Pool & Waterfall
As you traverse through the verdant jungle, you will encounter old Balinese shrines and a unique greenish natural pool along your journey. However, do not stop there—continue onward to discover the stunning Tembeling natural pool and its delightful waterfall at the bottom, featuring crystal clear waters that beckon you for a refreshing dip!
Tembeling Beach & Cave
At the base of the ravine, Tembeling beach awaits with its soft white sand and some inviting swing sets for relaxation. Should you wander just 25 meters to the west, you will discover a magnificent sea cave adorned with countless rock cairns and offering an impressive view of the soaring white cliffs above. If you carry a drone, this location serves as an excellent launch point for capturing breathtaking aerial shots of the cliffs!
Entrance Fees
Visitors should anticipate an entrance fee of 10k Rupiah (~$1 USD), effective as of 2024, granting access to this beautiful natural site.
How To Get There
Tembeling beach and forest is situated on the southwest side of Nusa Penida island, easily accessible by car or scooter. The journey from the main docks and accommodations in northern Penida typically takes about one hour. However, exercise caution while riding a scooter, as the final portion of the rocky trail to Tembeling presents some of the most challenging road conditions in Penida, requiring you to take it slow to avoid accidents.

Nusa Penida Private Driver
For those wishing to explore Nusa Penida comfortably and safely, hiring a private driver for the day is my top recommendation. A reliable option provides a full day of driving and sightseeing in Penida (up to 8 hours) for 1-5 passengers. This service includes the whole van, a driver, and petrol, ensuring a stress-free exploring experience.
Many travelers, including myself, have used this service for tours and activities and found it to be an excellent option!
Where We Stayed
During our stay, we found accommodation at a local villa on the north coast of Nusa Penida, where we enjoyed a private double room equipped with cold A/C, hot shower, and reliable WiFi for a reasonable price of 240k Rupiah ($15 USD). This budget-friendly option is ideally located near some of the best restaurants on the island! We were quite pleased with our choice.
Keep in mind that prices may fluctuate, so it’s wise to keep an eye out for good deals.
