Exploring the Tegalalang Rice Terraces and Gunung Kawi Temple in Bali
The Tegalalang rice terraces, located in Ubud, along with Gunung Kawi Temple, stand as prominent cultural landmarks in Bali.
Following our previous hike along the Campuhan Ridge Walk, the highlight of our next day was indulging in rejuvenating massages—two in total, interspersed with time spent relaxing by the pool.
This particular trip to Bali was focused on leisure, hence our objective was to return home fully refreshed. Consequently, our itinerary consisted of alternating between days of relaxation and exploration.
After a delightful home-prepared breakfast at our villa, we were collected by our driver, who transported us directly to our first destination—the Tegalalang rice terraces.
Upon our arrival, we proceeded to purchase entry tickets, although it seemed unnecessary since there was no ticket verification, and we needed to walk a considerable distance from the stand to the terraces. Yet, given the minimal cost of the tickets, this was soon forgotten.
During our last visit to Tegalalang, the scenery was stark—brown and barren post-harvest. However, this time, the verdant landscape was surprisingly beautiful, presenting an array of lush greenery and a picturesque setting.
Exploring Gunung Kawi Temple
My visit to Gunung Kawi Temple was notably my inaugural experience, having missed it during my previous trip. Little did I know that reaching the main temples required descending several steps, which only meant more steps to climb back up later.
It is essential to wear a sarong when visiting the temple grounds. This is provided as part of your entry fee; thus, it is not necessary to bring one, unless you prefer to avoid sharing.
To truly appreciate the temple’s surroundings, I highly recommend ascending the stairs located behind the temple. This vantage point reveals a breathtaking view of the structure, enveloped by lush trees and the emblematic rice terraces.
Travel Tips for Visitors
While visiting the Tegalalang Rice Terraces, it is important to note that there is limited shade. Hence, consider bringing an umbrella for additional comfort. Additionally, utilize ample sunscreen to protect against the sun and carry at least a small water bottle to stay hydrated; convenient water stalls are available across the road post-visit.
Ultimately, the commendable tropical hues of the terraces and cultural significance of Gunung Kawi Temple contribute to the allure of Bali, making it a destination worth visiting multiple times.
