The Amalfi Coast is a stunning stretch of coastline situated along the Gulf of Salerno and the Tyrrhenian Sea in southern Italy’s province of Salerno. Renowned for its exceptional natural beauty and historical landmarks, including Pompeii and Herculaneum, it ranks among the country’s most frequented tourist locations and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the mid-’90s.
Pompeii is an extraordinary historic site; ironically, the calamity that obliterated the unsuspecting population of the town also led to the remarkable preservation of numerous artifacts that would typically have been lost to other natural disasters. Visitors will encounter art, furniture, and everyday items utilized by the residents, alongside the haunting plaster casts that depict individuals during their final moments.
The Antiquarium of Pompeii has reopened as a museum, showcasing finds that illustrate and narrate the captivating story of the ancient city of Pompeii. This historic building has undergone a complete refurbishment and has been inaugurated with a new layout, tracing the history of Pompeii from the Samnite era – 4th century BC – until the eruption of AD 79.
The current conservation project in Pompeii has unearthed spectacular finds in recent years. The latest discovery is an incredibly well-preserved snack bar that offers insight into the dining habits of Ancient Romans.
Even though the Ancient Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed almost two millennia ago, it continues to fascinate us to this day – especially when the archaeological excavations bring back to light haunting and incredible discoveries.
Recently, a woman reportedly sent a package to Italy, supposedly containing items that she had taken from the historical site of Pompeii, along with a note of apology. International media quickly picked up on the strangeness of the incident, due in large part to her claims of being cursed with bad luck as a result of her actions. According to the park, this is far from the first incidence of this nature; tourists from all over the world have been sending items back for many years, attributing their misfortune to these artifacts.
Ancient Pompeii is one of Italy’s most haunting sights. Streets of skeletal ruins stretch into the distance while Mt Vesuvius broods darkly on the horizon, reminding visitors of the tragic eruption in 79 CE, which decimated the local population and buried the city under a thick layer of volcanic debris.
It’s possibly the hottest thing to hit Pompeii since the eruption of Mt Vesuvius covered the city in flaming ash andlapilli(burning fragments of pumice stone) back in AD 79. A new exhibition, entitledArt and Sensuality in the Houses of Pompeii, includes 70 provocative paintings, sculptures, and other decorative erotica found at the vast 66-hectare archaeological site, on show together for the first time.
Say what you will about natural disasters like the one that befell the little cities below Vesuvius in 79 AD, but one thing is for certain: Archaeologists and historians sifting through the ancient remains can tell far more about these cities than they can about ones that took their sweet time to collapse.
