The rough-and-ready desert outpost of Moab is nestled in a sandstone valley in southeastern Utah, with easy access to amazing rafting, hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and other adventures in a remarkable expanse of sand, stone, and sky. The town itself is little more than a strip of adobe shops, bike stores, guiding outfitters, restaurants, and t-shirt shops; its real draw is the proximity to the amazing public lands nearby.
Moab is a fantastic destination for free adventures. Aside from the occasional park entry fee, the trails, rivers, canyons, and wilderness surrounding the town invite exploration at no cost. Additionally, there are opportunities to access the Canyonlands and Arches National Parks for free. You can save on accommodation by camping in some of the primitive campsites found on BLM and other public lands outside the parks.
The gateway to Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park, Moab is located in a desolate (and breathtakingly beautiful) corner of southeast Utah. Given the distances involved, most visitors get to, from, and around the region by car.
