Mérida, the capital of the state of Yucatán in the south of Mexico, is a city set to music. Stroll through Plaza Grande on a Friday night and you’ll see localgruposjamming, bare palms tapping African drums, instrument cases flung open so passersby can drop a few pesos. “Musicians here play from the heart,” says local guitarist Armando Gonzalez who often plays in the plazas. “I wear sunglasses when I perform so I can close my eyes and feel the music.”
Now that Cancun and its neighboring cities are drawing an international party crowd, travelers are looking inland.
By our fourth day in Merida, Mexico, we felt we’d seen most of the major sights (especially on this day and this day for the cenotes and Mayan ruins just outside of Merida), but one place we hadn’t covered yet was Paseo de Montejo, renowned for its grand homes and palaces.
Merida is an incredible city in Mexico to visit. Nestled on the Yucatan Peninsula, around 3-4 hours west of Cancun, Merida is gorgeous, with heaps of restaurants, historic buildings, and stunning neighborhoods to experience. There are countless activities in Merida that will fill any trip to the city. However, with such a diverse range of attractions, finding the best things to do can result in some tough choices!
Our time in Merida was unforgettable, and we’d revisit in a heartbeat. In fact, it may very well be my favorite city in all of Mexico!
Mérida may be small and house a singular important aspect to see—its Roman ruins. However, the abundance of ancient remains here ensures visitors will have plenty to explore during their stay!
