A Fresh Perspective on Travel Every Day
In the mountainous Upper Carniola, the small city of Kranj is positioned at the convergence of the Sava and Kokra rivers. While Kranj is primarily an industrial hub, its Old Town captivates visitors with an unconventional layout clinging to a narrow limestone ridge above the two rivers.
Slovenia’s third-largest city is situated in the Lower Savinja Valley, surrounded by towering, forested hills. Dominating one peak to the south is Celje’s Old Castle, the historic stronghold of the Counts of Celje, who governed a significant portion of Slovenian territory during the medieval period. Slovenia, perhaps somewhat unfairly, may not be the initial choice for many travelers seeking an exciting holiday destination. Nevertheless, it is gradually emerging as a noteworthy location to explore, and first-time visitors will undoubtedly be satisfied.
Ever since our expedition to Slovakia during the winter season, I have continuously encountered numerous images of Slovenia across various platforms (credit toPinterest). A few weeks ago, during a discussion regarding my urgent desire to explore Slovenia, we received an inviting proposal to participate in a wine tour of the country.
A few years ago, all I knew about Slovenia was that it wasn’t Slovakia. However, when I was invited to travel in Slovenia by a glamping company, I jumped at the chance. Traveling with my fiancé at the time, Tan, we embraced this opportunity to explore a country rich in nature, delicious food, and warm-hearted people.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a country that packs so much to see and do in such a compact area.
For proof that good things come in small packages, one need only visit Slovenia. In an area half the size of Switzerland, this Central European country packs in breathtaking mountain scenery, lively coastal resorts, fashionable cities, crystal-clear lakes and rivers, and charming, isolated villages.
I’ve been writing about Slovenia for over a decade. Throughout my journeys, I have consistently found Slovenians to be welcoming and deeply proud of their country, especially regarding Slovenia’s commitment to the environment and sustainability. Moreover, English is widely spoken, ensuring you can navigate the country with ease.
Slovenia is often described as a small yet enchanting country. Ranking 24th in size among 27 EU nations, its compact geography is a blessing for travelers. In a single trip, you can explore some of Slovenia’s most picturesque villages, enchanting forests, vineyard-covered hills, karst landscapes, and charming seaside towns, capturing breathtaking photos along the way.
Filling Slovenia’s Julian Alps-stuffed northwest corner, Triglav National Park (TNP) is more than just the country’s largest swatch of protected land – it’s the mythical heart of a nation regularly called the world’s most sustainable destination.
It’s no mystery why Slovenia has become one of the top destinations in Europe for independent travelers. Within its compact geographical area, visitors can soak up the sun on Adriatic beaches, hike in the Julian Alps, swim in glacial lakes, and kayak on crystal-clear mountain rivers.
Sandwiched between the expansive shores of Italy and Croatia, Slovenia’s small, 30-mile strip of Adriatic coast is a balmy contrast to a mainland blanketed in dense foliage and towering mountains.
Slovenia’s remote Koroška (Carinthia) region, a mountainous area running along the country’s northern border with Austria, is firmly off the beaten track. Even for Slovenians, this traditionally industrial district feels out of the way, and most visitors come to see the unique experiences around Unesco-listed, cross-border Karavanke Geopark. However, this under-the-radar region offers a wealth of adventures for intrepid travelers, and my guide for the journey – Matej Kandare – promised several days filled with excitement.

As is often the case with Slovenia, even its best places to swim are impossible to pigeonhole. They defy typical definitions. Sure, the country’s 29 miles (47km) of coastline between Croatia and Italy offers wonderful beaches for relaxation, but this Central European nation also boasts a slew of unexpected inland swimming spots.
