You may have noticed a portion of Switzerland missing on this map. We have previously been to Lucerne, Bern, Gruyère, Montreux, and Geneva on other trips. While they were also amazing places to visit in Switzerland, it is too much to fit into this one road trip. One suggestion is to spend only two days each in Basel and Zurich to add a day each in Bern and Lucerne. However, this Switzerland road trip itinerary allows you to see a lot of the country while giving you time to relax and immerse in the atmosphere.

We have visited Switzerland multiple times, but it wasn’t until our latest trip that we truly had a clear plan and created the ultimate road trip itinerary showcasing mountains, cities, and the Mediterranean feel of southern Switzerland. If you follow this Swiss itinerary, you will experience the very best of Switzerland and create lasting memories.

Train Travel in Switzerland

We have taken the train through Switzerland as well, and if you don’t want to drive, you can easily get to all of these destinations by train. Switzerland has an efficient and easy-to-navigate train system, and by purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass, you can see all our road trip stops in Switzerland by rail. Visit MySwitzerland.com for more travel planning for Switzerland.

Week 1 – Swiss Cities

The first week of our Switzerland road trip takes us to two of Switzerland’s most exciting cities. Exploring Cities is a great way to start any trip to Europe. You can ease into the adventures as you work off jet lag and enjoy all the comforts and amenities of the big city before venturing off the beaten path. We flew into Zurich and spent three glorious days in Switzerland’s largest city.

Day 1 – Arrive Zurich

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and deserves three days to truly explore everything it has to offer, as there is a wealth of sights to see. Upon arrival at Zurich International Airport, we followed the signs saying “Mietwagen” (Rental Car), where we picked up our vehicle at Europcar. We also arranged for a travelers WiFi at the service counter located on the same level. Internet service is a must when driving in Switzerland to follow Google Maps, although a paper map is a great backup.

Where to Stay in Zurich – Hotel Florhof Zurich

Hotel Florhof, Zurich

Following our GPS to Old Town, we checked into the Hotel Florhof Zurich. They have parking on-site, perfect for anyone on a Switzerland road trip. We didn’t use our car much in Zurich, though, because we were within walking distance of everything, and with the Zurich Card , we could easily navigate around the city with ease. (The car is great for early morning sunrises around the city).

This hotel is housed in a beautiful 18th-century patrician mansion. While the building is historic, the rooms are modern and contemporary. We loved our stay here. See the Hotel Florhof website for more details.

Afternoon: Walking Tour of Old Town

Rechberg Gardens

After settling in, we immediately joined our guide for a walking tour of Old Town. We highly recommend doing a walking tour when arriving in any European city from North America. It keeps you from having a “jet lag nap” and helps you sleep better at night. Plus, an introductory walking tour allows you to get your bearings in relation to your hotel and the popular attractions. Visit Zurich.com for city tours and additional information.

Top attractions in Zurich’s Old Town include – Rechberg Gardens (located directly beside Hotel Florhof), Grossmünster – the most iconic building in Zurich, Münsterbrücke, The Limmat River, and views from Lindenhof and St. Peter’s church, among others.

Evening in Zurich West

Instead of relaxing after our walking tour, we made our way to Zurich West, the hottest part of town. Zurich West is an urban area filled with bars, restaurants, cafes, and art installations. Its accessibility is excellent, being approximately six stops from Old Town on the tram. The tram can be boarded using your Zurich Card, just ensure to validate your ticket before you board.

While in Zurich West, you must stop at Frau Gerolds Garten (Mrs. Gerold’s Garden). We loved this outdoor event space, and it’s a top attraction for both tourists and locals alike. We ordered a round of beers and went upstairs to overlook the outdoor patio and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.

There are plenty of ways to keep busy in Zurich West, from hitting the waves at Urban Surf (next door to Frau Gerold’s Garten) to exploring art at Escher-Wyss-Platz, Maag Hall, or Puls 5 to check out the latest exhibits. Don’t miss seeing Anne Sophie in front of 25hours Hotel Zurich-West.

Dinner – Restaurant Markthalle

One attraction not to miss while exploring Zurich West is the Zurich Viadukt Arches. These architectural highlights date back to 1894 and have shops and restaurants built into their high arches. We strolled along the 550-meter-long viaduct, enjoying views over the park. There are numerous places to grab a bite to eat or shop within the 36 viaduct arches. We dined outside at Restaurant Markthalle, relishing a picturesque parkside view.

Day 2 – Lake Zurich and Chocolate

On our second day in Zurich, we soaked in scenic views of this beautiful city and had a chance to indulge in delightful chocolate and great food. We headed to Bürkliplatz Pier early in the morning for a cruise on Lake Zurich.

Morning in Zurich: Cruise and Lakeside Stroll

Cassiopeia Boardwalk

Wollishofen is a former industrial area transformed into an artist’s community, offering a vibrant atmosphere. The highlight here is the Cassiopeia Boardwalk, a delightful pedestrian walkway that extends along the beautiful Lake Zurich. We continued walking along the lakeshore, enjoying the sunshine before arriving at Mönchhof Am See for lunch in their beer garden, relishing fresh fish from the lake.

Afternoon: Lindt Home of Chocolate

Amongst the top things to do in Zurich is visiting the Lindt Home of Chocolate. A tour of this facility is a must, where you can indulge in chocolate tasting.

This cutting-edge building houses a testing plant where chocolatiers craft new recipes and techniques. We walked through interactive exhibits detailing the history of chocolate in Switzerland and discovered an incredible room featuring chocolate fountains. Armed with a spoon, we sampled delicious Lindt chocolate and tried chunks of various flavors.

Evening: Bahnhofstrasse and Paradeplatz

After our chocolate exploration, we returned downtown on the tram to Bahnhofstrasse for window shopping and dinner. This area is bustling with boutique shops and high-end name brands. We then walked to Paradeplatz for dinner and drinks, soaking in the lively evening atmosphere of Zurich. We had dinner at Restaurant Zeughauskeller, where the service was excellent and it was a good spot to sample Swiss food!

Day 3 – Mountains and Water

Our final day in Zurich was warm and beautiful, providing an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. We began our day with a stunning sunrise at Lindenhof, overlooking the Limmat River and the Old Town. After a hearty breakfast included with our stay at Hotel Florhof, we prepared for a day on the water and in the mountains.

Morning – SUP at Seebad Enge Swimming Area

The morning commenced at Seebad Enge, a public swimming area on Lake Zurich featuring sun decks, swimming lanes, a restaurant, and a sauna. It is highly popular with locals. We rented paddleboards and ventured out to explore Lake Zurich, gliding through the boats toward the Schanzengraben Canal, offering a scenic way to appreciate Zurich’s architecture from the water. Check for prices and opening hours here.

Lunch: Swiss Fondue

Before our afternoon excursion, we returned to Old Town for lunch at Swiss Chuchi. A visit to Switzerland wouldn’t be complete without fondue, and Swiss Chuchi served the best Swiss Fondue we’ve ever enjoyed, along with extraordinary service.

Afternoon: Uetliberg

After savoring fondue, we hopped on the tram to Uetliberg, Zurich’s own mountain standing 869 meters (2850 feet) above sea level, offering breathtaking views over Zurich, Lake Zurich, and the Swiss Alps. The train ride to the top adds to the excitement, leading to a short hike to a viewing tower with postcard-perfect vistas. There is a nominal cost of 2CHF to go up the tower, payable by card at the machine.

Evening: Sunset

Fraumünster Church

After returning to the city, we went to enjoy the sunset by the lake, taking in beautiful views of the church steeples in Old Town and the Swiss Alps in the distance. Our favorite sunset spot in Zurich is in front of Sechseläutenplatz on the water, perfect for a romantic evening. However, for photographs, we recommend the bridge looking at Fraumünster or Quaibrücke, which is the last bridge between Zurich Old Town and Lake Zurich.

Day 4 – Transfer to Basel

It’s time to say goodbye to Zurich and hello to our favorite city in Switzerland, Basel! This beautiful historic city is a must-stop on any Switzerland itinerary, and three days is just enough time to experience it all. Located just over an hour from Zurich, there was no need to rush to arrive in Basel by noon. Check out 20 Reasons to Fall in Love with Basel, Switzerland

Morning: Transfer to Basel and Check-in at ART HOUSE Basel Hotel

We checked into ART HOUSE Hotel Basel after parking our car in a nearby garage. ART HOUSE Basel is a design hotel situated on the bustling pedestrian street, Steinenvorstadt, making it an excellent base for your stay in Basel. The contemporary rooms are both spacious and elegant. See their website for availability and pricing.

After a quick lunch at nearby Restaurant Kunsthalle, we did what we typically do upon arriving at a new city: took a walking tour.

Afternoon: Old Town Walking Tour

A walking tour of the Old Town is a fantastic way to familiarize yourself with the city. The Old Town is easily accessible from the ART HOUSE Basel Hotel, making exploration a breeze. We dedicated three hours to check out all the top sights in Grossbasel (the Left Side of the River Bank). Visit This is Basel for city tours of Basel.

Things to See in Old Town Basel

There are plenty of attractions to see in Old Town Basel, and an afternoon isn’t quite enough, but a few highlights include City Hall (Rathaus) by Market Square (Marktplatz), the Hoosesagg Museum (Pocket Museum), Tinguely Fountain, and the hanging gardens of the Museum der Kulturen Basel (Museum of Cultures). For more things to do in Basel, check out 24 Fantastic Things to do in Basel, Switzerland

Evening: Weidling Boat Tour

After our tour, we grabbed a quick lunch before strolling along the Rhine River toward the Museum Tinguely, where we met our guides for one of the most interesting excursions in Basel: a tour on a traditional Weidling boat. You can select between a canopé tour, where you sit back and relax while enjoying an evening cocktail, or try your hand at paddling and assist in propelling upriver. Naturally, we opted to paddle to immerse ourselves in this ancient way of traversing the river. It turned out to be a fantastic workout and a lot of fun. Visit the Waidlig Basilea website for more details.

Dinner: If you decide to paddle, you will undoubtedly build up an appetite. A highly recommended dining spot is Ufer 7 for dinner. It’s located on the Rhine and boasts a fantastic atmosphere coupled with delightful food.

Day 5 – E-bike Exploration

Day two in Basel is perfect for exploration via e-bike. We enjoy touring on e-bikes because they cover a lot of ground. After having explored much of Old Town, it was time to discover more sights around the town. We began our biking tour at the Basel Exhibition Center, taking in the stunning giant oculus ceiling. We then hopped on our bikes and rode out of town to stand at the crossroad of three countries – the Dreiländereck is where Germany, France, and Switzerland meet.

After cycling along the waterfront, our next destination was an artistic exploration at the Foundation Beyeler to view stunning contemporary art that includes a private collection featuring Monet, Cézanne, van Gogh, and Picasso. This venue also provided a lovely garden for lunch before we continued to our next stop. Rent your e-bike from Rent a Bike in Central Station.

Afternoon: Cross into Germany

In the afternoon, we crossed the border by e-bike to explore another interesting museum, Vitra Design Museum in Germany. This expansive museum is filled with contemporary structures and installations, with a cycling trail from Foundation Beyeler marked by 24 installations created by Tobias Rehberger.

Evening: Sunset Dinner at Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois

After returning our bikes, we strolled down to the Rhine to watch the sunset from Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois (Three Kings). You can choose to enjoy a cocktail on the terrace overlooking the Rhine or indulge in a full dinner. We opted for cocktails to savor the luxurious surroundings. For a taste of old-world charm, you can also choose to stay here! Make reservations or book accommodation on their website here.

Day 6 – Museums and History

For our final day in Basel, we immersed ourselves in history and culture. We started the day at Kunstmuseum Basel, exploring both permanent and rotating collections. This museum is one of the most popular in Basel, and simply walking through the stunning architecture is an artwork in itself. After a morning of appreciating art, we walked to the Rhine for a lovely lunch at Le Rhin Bleu. This outdoor restaurant offers amazing views, excellent food, and a relaxing ambiance. In winter, it transforms into a sauna! See Le Rhin Bleu for reservations.

Afternoon: On the River

After lunch, it was time to cross the Rhine on the traditional ferry. The reaction ferry operates at four locations along the Rhine, utilizing the current’s momentum, a cable, and a rudder to cross the river without a motor. This is a must-do experience while visiting Basel. Once you cross the river, feel free to join the locals in a refreshing afternoon swim. A popular jumping-off point is below Museum Tinguely at Klein Basel (Right Side of the River Bank).

Week 2 – Mountains and Nature

Day 7 – Basel to Grindelwald

Morning street art tour in Basel before moving on to Grindelwald

Morning Street Art Walk

Before departing Basel, we suggest taking one last tour, a walking tour with Artstüebli Basel. We spent 90 minutes exploring the contemporary street art sprinkled throughout the city. You may have missed much of it during your three days in Basel, so let an expert guide show you the hidden gems as a wonderful farewell to Basel. Visit their website to book a tour.

Early Afternoon Arrival in Grindelwald

It is a two-hour drive from Basel to Grindelwald, so there is no need to hurry, especially since we couldn’t check in too early at the hotel. Given the stunning scenery here, you may want to get an early start and arrive around lunchtime, allowing ample time to savor the best of Grindelwald over the next three days. Read more: The Complete Guide to Grindelwald-First in Switzerland

Where to Stay in Grindelwald

After checking into our hotel, the Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof, we wasted no time getting out to explore. Visit the hotel website for rates and availability. The hotel offers indoor parking for a fee, and having a car allowed us to drive right up to our next stop on the itinerary: Glacier Canyon Grindelwald. Buses also serve the Gorge.

The best way to navigate Grindelwald is by utilizing passes offered through Jungfrau Railways. Visit their website for packages.

Afternoon: Glacier Canyon Grindelwald

The Glacier Canyon Grindelwald is spectacular, and the photos fail to do justice to this impressive gorge with rushing waters and a stone pathway winding alongside. One thrilling addition in recent years is a trampoline over the rapids, adding an adrenaline rush. The 170-meter Spiderweb offers an incredible view down the gorge, allowing you to feel the power of the River Lütschine. Visit their website for more details.

After several hours at Glacier Canyon Grindelwald, we returned to Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof to dinner on the outdoor terrace. This beautiful setting offered the perfect end to a fulfilling day, and we unwound in their marvelous spa and saunas, recharging for the adventures ahead.

Day 8 – Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

One of the most memorable days on our Switzerland road trip itinerary occurred at Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. The Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof is located steps from the Grindelwald train station, where we boarded the train to Grindelwald Terminal, marking the beginning of our adventure. Once we arrived, we boarded the Eiger Express, the world’s most modern tri-cable gondola, which took us up to Eiger Glacier station.

Morning: Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

At this station, everyone transfers to Jungfraubahn (The Jungfrau Railway) for a ride aboard the historic cogwheel train leading us to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. At the summit, expansive views of glaciers and snow-capped peaks await from the Glacier Plateau and Sphinx Terrace.

There is also an extraordinary ice palace and sculptures situated within a 1000-meter maze of tunnels beneath the glacier, which is awe-inspiring. Here, you’ll find displays showcasing the history of Jungfraujoch and the engineering feats it took to create the cogwheel train reaching high into the mountains. Read more Spectacular Switzerland, a Visit to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe.

You can buy advance tickets from Grindelwald or Interlaken to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe at Jungfrau Railways. We highly recommend the Top of Europe Pass for added flexibility in case of weather changes. Passes start at three days for 239 CHF ($260 USD).

Afternoon – Eiger Trail

After several hours at Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, it was time to descend aboard the cogwheel train down to Eiger Glacier station, where we began the stunning scenic hike along the Eiger Trail. This beautiful path provides breathtaking views of the Eiger North Wall accompanied by picturesque mountains and valleys, and here we encountered delightful Swiss cows roaming the hills. Just listen for their cowbells to find them.

After an exhausting day, we returned to the hotel (we had the half-board package including dinner each night) to relax and soak in the spa, which featured a soothing foot bath to alleviate our tired feet.

Day 9 – Grindelwald First

After a restful night, we indulged in a plentiful buffet breakfast at the hotel. We checked out of Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof for one night, packing an overnight bag for trekking while leaving the bulk of our luggage in the trunk of our car parked at the hotel. It was a brief 10-minute walk to the Grindelwald-First Gondola. Tickets for Grindelwald gondola and adventures can be purchased here.

Morning: Lake Bachalp Hike

The Grindelwald-First Gondola takes you to the most famous hike in Grindelwald, Bachalpsee (Lake Bachalp), renowned for its stunning reflections of the mountains in the lake. It’s about an hour’s hike to the lake, and every step is worth it.

We paused on a bench, soaking in the views and fresh mountain air before heading back to Berggasthaus First to check into our room for the night. We also savored raclette for lunch in their restaurant. After checking in, we had an entire afternoon to explore, so it was time for some thrilling Grindelwald fun!

Afternoon: Grindelwald Adventures

There are endless adventures available. While the lifts are open, consider taking the long way down the mountain instead of using the gondola. The First Adventures allow you to have fun while descending to Grindelwald. Start with the First Flyer, then hop on the First Glider. It’s time to mountain cart from Schreckfeld to the Bort station, finishing off with a Trotti bike ride back to Grindelwald. Be sure to time it so you can catch the last gondola back up to spend the night!

Evening: First Cliff Walk and Berggasthaus First

Since we were staying at the top, we had the luxury of walking the First Cliff Walk at our leisure. Once the gondolas close for the evening, only overnight guests are present. The best time to visit was at sunset when we had the entire place to ourselves. Dinner at Berggasthaus First capped off our day beautifully, and let me confirm, we had the best night’s sleep here of our entire trip! Book your Grindelwald adventures here.

Day 10 – Sunrise at Bachalpsee and More Hikes

We woke early for another chance to witness Bachalpsee at sunrise, the ideal time to enjoy its beauty in solitude since only a few can spend the night at Grindelwald First. Sunrise truly highlighted the stunning panorama, so we set out before breakfast for a delightful hike with breathtaking views.

Morning: Bachalpsee Hike – First – Männlichen

Following our sunrise hike and breakfast at Berggasthaus First, we were set for another adventurous day ahead. The trek to our upcoming adventure involved riding a few gondolas and trains leading us back to Grindelwald Terminal, where we boarded a gondola to Männlichen Station. Keep an eye out for marmots along the way!

Lunch: Männlichen

Upon reaching the top, we enjoyed a delicious lunch on the patio accompanied by panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. This location is perfect for lingering over a meal. It features a family-friendly playground, a restaurant, and a viewing platform, functioning as the starting point for several hiking trails included in today’s itinerary as we embark on the Männlichen Hike.

Afternoon Männlichen Hike

The hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg is one of the most popular routes in the region and is an easy hike showcasing stunning views of the mountains and valleys, perfect for families. This enjoyable path makes a delightful way to conclude our hiking explorations in the Grindelwald region. Get your gondola tickets to here.

Evening: Harder Kulm

Once we completed our hike, it was time to head back and take the train to Interlaken. From there, we boarded another historic cogwheel train to one more magnificent viewpoint, Harder Kulm – the Top of Interlaken. We were determined not to miss this view! Additionally, we savored a fondue dinner at Panorama Restaurant Harder Kulm, located at 1,322 meters (4,337 feet) above sea level, overlooking Lake Brienz, Lake Thun, the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. It was an extraordinary experience! You can purchase Harder Kulm Tickets through Jungfrau Railways.

We concluded our day by returning to Grindelwald and rechecking into the Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof for the night, saying farewell to this beautiful destination.

Day 11 – Leukerbad

It was time to leave Grindelwald behind this morning. After all the hiking and outdoor activities, Leukerbad is the ideal stop for relaxation in a genuine Swiss spa. The drive from Grindelwald to Leukerbad is remarkable.

Morning: Transfer from Grindelwald to Leukerbad

One of the most memorable moments was driving onto the Lötschberg Car Train, which took us right through the mountain. It was one of the wildest experiences we had. We sat in our car during the 15-minute ride from the Midlands to Valais.

Where to Stay in Leukerbad

Although Leukerbad has multiple public spas, our hotel, Hotel Les Sources des Alpes, features its own exquisite spa. This luxurious hotel serves as a tranquil retreat, perfectly suited to rejuvenate and recharge for the next leg of our Switzerland road trip. We adored our suite, which felt like a private spa, making it difficult to check out. Yet, we had to move on.

Afternoon: Spa

Upon arriving in Leukerbad, we headed directly to the Leukerbad Therme Spa. With 65 natural springs pouring out 3.9 million liters of hot water, Leukerbad ranks among the largest and most frequented spa resorts in Switzerland. The Leukerbad Therme is the largest and most renowned, but there are other options, including the quieter Therme 51°.

After a day filled with outdoor fun or spa treatments, we savored one of the most romantic meals we experienced in Switzerland at restaurant La Malvoisie in Hotel Les Sources des Alpes. We truly enjoyed our stay at this hotel.

Day 12 – Leukerbad to Zermatt

Although Leukerbad was a brief stay on our Switzerland road trip, we made a mental note to return. It’s an incredible place, perfect for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. In fact, our friend Carol of Wandering Carol had her honeymoon in Leukerbad, which speaks volumes since she is an avid traveler.

Gemmi and Torrent Cable Cars

While the spas attract many, two mountain railways—Gemmi and Torrent—guide visitors to breathtaking views of the four-thousand-meter peaks of the Valais Alps. If time permits, take one of the cable cars to enjoy vistas of the valley and embark on a morning hike before continuing onward. Tickets can be purchased on-site.

Drive to Matterhorn Terminal Tasch – Zermatt

It’s only a 90-minute drive from Leukerbad to Matterhorn Terminal Tasch. Terminal Tasch is where we parked our car, collected our luggage, and hopped on the train to Zermatt. Zermatt prohibits motorized vehicles, necessitating train travel for everyone visiting. Once we arrived, we immediately understood why this restriction is in place: the streets are narrow and bustling with pedestrian traffic.

Where to Stay in Zermatt

At Hotel Aristella, we arranged for their driver to pick us up at Zermatt train station. Electric taxis and bicycles are allowed, zipping around quickly, making it imperative to be cautious while walking. We didn’t linger at the hotel, which is centrally located, and instead dropped our bags to enjoy as much time as possible in this stunning region.

Afternoon: Matterhorn Museum Zermatlantis and Old Town

As we arrived in Zermatt in the afternoon, there wasn’t enough time to ascend the mountain before the last gondola back down, so we wandered downtown to visit the Matterhorn Museum Zermatlantis. This museum provides a perfect introduction to Zermatt’s history and the tales of climbing the majestic Matterhorn. Read more about Zermatt: Incredible Zermatt, Switzerland – 23 Exciting Things to See and Do

Old Village of Hinterdorf.

The museum is nestled within the main square, close to the Old Village of Hinterdorf. Don’t forget to check out the historic buildings from the 16th century after visiting the museum, with the best viewpoint available from Pfarrkirche St. Mauritius (Paris Church of St. Mauritius), located next door.

Dinner at Restaurant Spycher

We were thrilled that dinner was included in our stay at Hotel Aristella within our half-board package, as Restaurant Spycher appeared to be one of the most popular spots in town. Each evening, it was packed with diners, and rightfully so—the food and service were excellent, complemented by their flambé dishes that turned dining into an event!

Evening: Zermatt Matterhorn Viewpoint

After dinner, we strolled to The Zermatt Matterhorn Viewpoint, a mere 15-minute walk (with a steep incline) from our hotel. This viewpoint offers a breathtaking view of the town, adorned with the soaring Matterhorn overhead. It marked a perfect ending to our first day in Zermatt. Following sunset, we turned in early for the adventures planned for the next day!

Day 13 – Mountain Bike 4 Lakes Tour

I am not exaggerating when I say this was the most beautiful day throughout our entire road trip in Switzerland. After renting our e-mountain bikes at Slalom Sport in downtown Zermatt, we boarded the train at Sunnegga Valley Station to ascend to Rothorn Valley Station, from where we commenced the 4 Lakes Bike Tour starting at Blauherd Station. You can rent mountain bikes at Slalom Sport – Intersport.

We explored four mountain lakes: Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grünsee, and Moosjisee, each lake showcasing extraordinary beauty. We paused for a delightful picnic at Moosjisee, bringing our lunch to enjoy by the water, with the Matterhorn majestically overseeing us. For more information about lift tickets, visit: Zermatt.ch And read more at 5 Lakes Hike Zermatt – Incredible Matterhorn Views

Afternoon: Oberer Höhenweg Bike Tour

After lunch, it was time to tackle a proper mountain biking trail, so we hopped on the Oberer Höhenweg Bike Tour. This single track led us through the forest and emerged at a sheer rocky cliff. Don’t worry, a safety steel cable is provided, and you can dismount if you feel uneasy. After descending the cliff, the single-track trail is quite manageable for intermediate riders, providing a fun opportunity to zip through the forest.

Evening: Explore Zermatt and the Vispa River

Upon returning to Zermatt, we utilized our bikes to further explore the area. Riding e-bikes allows for extensive coverage, so we journeyed to the other side of town to discover the waterfront along the Vispa River. Just remember, riding is prohibited on pedestrian streets, so be sure to dismount when entering the shopping area.

Exhausted from a day of biking, we enjoyed another decadent dinner at Restaurant Spycher before retreating to the hotel sauna for a relaxing end to the day, heading straight to bed as an early wake-up call awaited us.

Day 14 – Lake Stellisee and Gornergrat

Today promises to be one of the most iconic days in Zermatt. We retraced our steps slightly, following the first half of our cycling route. Rising early, we set out to hike to Lake Stellisee for the sunrise. For information on lift tickets to the Matterhorn, visit: Zermatt.ch

Morning Sunrise at Stellisee and Five Lakes Hike

Stellisee is likely the most photographed lake in the Matterhorn region, with sunrise providing the perfect moment for capturing its stunning reflection of the Matterhorn. Arriving early allows for a chance to see it without the usual crowds. After a train, gondola ride, and a 30-minute hike, we made it just in time to watch the sun illuminate the mountain. It was truly spectacular! Once completed, we enjoyed breakfast (included in our pass) at restaurant Fluhalp, located just a 10-minute walk away.

Hike to Riffelalp

Next, we hiked the five lakes path. If you had already mountain biked previously, you might have seen these lakes, so you can skip them as we did, though this is a suitable way to reach your subsequent stop. Aim to hike swiftly to Riffelalp, where a cogwheel train to Gornergrat awaits. Missing Gornergrat is not an option!

Afternoon: Gornergrat

If you thought Stellisee was magnificent, wait until you behold Gornergrat. As the train climbs higher, magnificent mountains come into view, resembling a wall of glaciers before your eyes. Upon reaching the summit, enjoyable dining options are available along with stunning views for days. Ensure to experience the Zooom multimedia display, which transports you to paragliding via virtual reality and a 3D cinema. For tickets and information to Gornergrat, visit Mountain Railways.

However, don’t overstay your welcome, as the hike is the true star of the show. Begin your descent at any stop along the way, and enjoy the most beautiful hike we’ve ever experienced. As we hiked down, we were surrounded by views of 29 peaks soaring over 4,000 meters (13,000 feet), including the Matterhorn, Switzerland’s highest peak, Dufourspitze at 4,634 meters, and the second-largest glacier, Gorner Glacier. The scenery proved to be too awe-inspiring to hike quickly!

This hike also presents opportunities to spot the famous black-nosed sheep of Zermatt. They wear GPS collars, making it easy to track them! We followed our phones’ prompts until we unexpectedly stumbled upon the sheep and their herder relaxing under a bridge. Find the sheep through GPS here. They are incredibly charming creatures!

After indulging in the breathtaking views all day, we returned to the hotel for a lovely dinner and an early rest. All this fresh air certainly induces a deep sleep. I must confess we didn’t partake in any nightlife in Zermatt; we spent three full days outdoors, which was our preference!

Week 3 – Mountains to Mediterranean

The third week of our Switzerland road trip shifts direction, taking us from Zermatt to the Italian region of Switzerland in Ticino. But before we embark, there’s one final excursion in the mountains of Zermatt to enjoy.

Day 15 – Morning at Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

Before departing Zermatt, we had an unforgettable morning ahead. We checked out from our hotel and stored our luggage to make the most of our final hours. We didn’t want to rush back, so we caught the first gondola up to experience another breathtaking mountain view.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise offers a panoramic perspective of 38 peaks soaring over 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) and 14 glaciers. The gondola ride itself is a thrilling adventure, gliding above the majestic glaciers on the way to the summit. Typically, this vantage point is reserved for helicopter tours, but you glide directly over immense crevasses, leaving you in awe.

Like Grindelwald, an ice palace also exists here; we wandered through tunnels carved 15 meters below the glacier’s surface. This palace features a slide, adding a playful twist to our experience! During our visit, we encountered people skiing amid the summer warmth, and there’s also a restaurant if you wish to enjoy lunch before moving on.

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Matterhorn Glacier Paradise; it’s an adventure you’ll treasure! Tickets to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise start at 53 CHF.

Afternoon: Zermatt to Ticino

It’s now time to transition from the mountains to drive towards southern Switzerland near the Italian border. We grabbed lunch at a market in Terminal Tasch to save time. With a full morning at Glacier Paradise, we needed to hustle to reach Ticino before dinner.

While journeying toward the Italian border, we enjoyed an adventurous drive through winding mountain roads that demanded our full attention. It was challenging to concentrate since we wanted to stop regularly to admire the views. One memorable scenic viewpoint was Nufenen Pass. At 2478m (8130ft), it’s the second-highest paved alpine road pass in Switzerland. We took our time navigating up the pass, while Maseratis and Porsches zipped past us with ease, breezing through the hairpin turns! The view from the summit was rewarding.

Afternoon: Arrive in Ticino and Relax

Ticino Feels like a Little Slice of Tuscany

On the other side, it was as if we entered a different realm. Ticino, known for its stunning lakes, evokes sensations of a little slice of Tuscany in Italy. During our stay, we explored the lakeside communities of Lugano, Locarno, and Ascona – the Lake Como(s) of Switzerland! Read more: Things to do in Lugano and the Ticino Region of Switzerland.

Where to Stay in Ticino

We made Resort Collina D’Oro, overlooking Lake Lugano, our base for three luxurious nights at this five-star resort and spa. We relished our dinners here (included in our half-board package) and savored every dish. With its Italian influence, Ticino truly offers the best culinary experiences in Switzerland!

Day 16 – Lavertezzo in Verzasca Valley

In Ticino, having a car becomes invaluable. Today was all about driving to explore nearby attractions. A must-see is the Verzasca Valley, known for its vibrant turquoise waters featuring a rushing river flowing through cliffs, rocks, and historic bridges. It is a favored spot for both hiking and swimming.

On our way to (or back) from Lavertezzo, we stopped at the Verzasca Dam, renowned from James Bond’s GoldenEye, where Pierce Brosnan jumped from the 220-meter-high engineering marvel. It is a sight to behold, and you can even leap from it if you’re brave!

Afternoon – Ascona

After exploring Verzasca Valley, we hopped back into our car to drive down the winding roads for a visit to the lakeside town of Ascona. Nestled along Lake Maggiore, Ascona features a colorful ambiance with vibrant buildings lining the waterfront. The pedestrian-friendly streets in the old town are ideal for shopping or leisurely strolls with ice cream in hand. For an added adventure, you can take a boat trip to Italy for the afternoon, perfect for a delightful lunch.

Locarno

On our journey back to the hotel, we stopped in the town of Locarno. Also located along Lake Maggiore, Locarno boasts a vast square, Piazza Grande (one of the largest piazzas in Switzerland), filled with charming pink and blue buildings. Be sure to visit the 12th-century castle, Castello Visconteo, and if time allows, explore the sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso located above Locarno in Orselina; this pilgrimage site is known for the apparition of the Virgin Mary to Brother Bartholomeo da Ivrea in 1480.

Day 17 – Castles and Hikes

After a day of exploring towns, it’s time to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site – The Bellinzona Castles. We started our day with coffee in the charming square of the capital of Ticino, Bellinzona, before exploring this delightful town. Castle Grande, standing proud over the city, is nearby the main square, and if time permits, you can hike to all of the castles. They are interconnected by trails weaving through breathtaking vineyards and rolling hills. The return hike takes only a couple of hours!

Afternoon: Ritom Funicular

If you’re up for more hiking, consider stopping to ascend to Piora via cable car from Piotta. The Ritom Funicular is an incline railway established in 1921. Once at the top, an easy hike leads you to the reservoir located 1794 meters above sea level, where you can enjoy spectacular valley views before heading to Capanna Cadagno for lunch. This easy trail is another fun hiking experience in Switzerland.

Evening – Lugano

In the evening, we journeyed to Lugano for an aperitivo. Located on Lake Lugano, the town presents a stunning waterfront view framed by two mountains (Monte San Salvatore and Mount Bre), evoking scenes reminiscent of Rio de Janeiro. We strolled along the 2km Lugano waterfront walk from Paradiso to Parco Ciani, enjoying ice cream, window shopping along the pedestrian streets, and exploring Parco Ciani. It’s genuinely a picturesque waterfront town.

As we dined on our resort terrace at Resort Collina D’Oro, we were treated to a beautiful sunset over the vineyards, followed by a relaxing dip in the pool, allowing us to indulge in the spa and sauna. I cherish that our hotels in Switzerland came equipped with fantastic spa facilities.

Day 18 – Ticino to St. Moritz

Another fantastic day of driving awaited on day 18 of our Switzerland road trip. The drive from Lugano to St. Moritz takes a mapped-out 2 1/2 hours, though traffic can significantly extend this. The one-lane, winding roads can often become congested due to transport trucks blocking the path. However, the trip is certainly worth it as the scenery is breathtaking. Landwasser Viaduct

We took the north route across Lulier Pass, celebrated as one of Switzerland’s most scenic roads. Along the way, we paused to admire the famous Landwasser Viaduct, a remarkable railway bridge characterized by six arches soaring 65 meters high as it spans across the valley. It’s one of the most photographed locations in Switzerland, and if you time it right, you might witness a train traversing the bridge (we were incredibly fortunate to synchronize with this event). A popular route connecting between St. Moritz and Zermatt is the Glacier Express, a direct train linking two mountain resorts.

Afternoon: Arrive in St. Moritz

After reaching St. Moritz, we checked into the luxurious Hotel Kulm for a night of relaxation. This property is splendid and offers every amenity imaginable, making it challenging to leave the premises. We enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the hotel, diving into its rich 160-year history. Read more about the history of Hotel Kulm here.

Evening: Kulm Country Club

After indulging in the hotel’s luxurious spa and outdoor infinity pool, we walked over to the Kulm Country Club for dinner, followed by a nightcap in the hotel bar as we retired to our elegant suite. The room’s complimentary bar offered beer, allowing us to enjoy a last beverage while basking in the twinkling lights dancing on Lake St. Moritz from our balcony.

Day 19 – Alpine Hike and Swiss Cheese

A day in St. Moritz during winter is all about skiing and snowboarding, but our summer visit focused on hiking adventures. Read more: Stunning St. Moritz – Summer Fun in Switzerland

Morning: Muottas Muragl to Segantini Hütte Hike

One of the best recommended activities in St. Moritz in summer is to hike from Muottas Muragl to Segantini Hütte and on to Alp Languard. This picturesque trail climbs to an elevation of 2731 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking vistas of snow-capped mountains and glaciers. For more information regarding timetables, tickets, and further details on Muottas Muragl, visit MySwitzerland.com.

Lunch: Alp-Schaukäserei Morteratsch

The hike typically takes only a few hours, providing ample time to enjoy lunch at the Alp-Schaukäserei Morteratsch (the Morteratsch alpine cheese dairy). This outdoor dining location is popular among locals and tourists alike. They prepare cheese using traditional methods; ordering the cheese board and fondue is a must for an authentic Swiss experience!

Afternoon: Drive to Bad Ragaz

Your stay in St. Moritz was brief, giving us just enough of a taste of its splendor. We were now ready to begin our return journey toward Zurich. However, our route included two nights relaxing in Bad Ragaz, indulging in one of the largest and most luxurious spas in Switzerland.

Where to Stay in Bad Ragaz

Our arrival at the luxurious Grand Resort Bad Ragaz revealed a property housing seven restaurants, three bars, a bistro, and two spas, the perfect end to our Switzerland road trip. Tonight, we enjoyed a Michelin Star dinner at Verve by Sven. The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is home to three Michelin Star eateries! We didn’t resist the temptation of a cocktail in the hotel lounge, despite an early hike planned for the following morning. It was off to bed in our opulent suite, preparing for another epic hiking journey.

Day 20 – Bad Ragaz and 5 Lakes Hike

The day ahead combined exercise with relaxation, so be prepared for enjoyment! Following a delicious breakfast at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, we picked up our boxed lunch for one of the best hikes in Switzerland.

Morning 5 Lakes Hike

The Pizol 5 Lake Hike ranks among the most popular trails in Switzerland. This hike leads you to five crystalline mountain lakes, ideal for capturing reflections of the mountains in the calm waters. Unfortunately, we encountered a rainy and overcast day, missing the promised mountain vistas, but we consoled ourselves in knowing we had a luxurious resort to return to, along with access to two spas!

Afternoon: Tamina Therme and Grand Resort Spas

Our afternoon was spent enjoying the thermal baths’ water circuit, followed by relaxing in the hot saunas. We quickly forgot the gloomy weather experienced during our hike, basking in the luxury of heat and water.

Staying at the Grand Hotel Bad Ragaz allows access to the Tamina Therme, one of the most traditional and well-known spas in Switzerland. No photos are allowed inside the spas, but we had early access and special permission to photograph the hotel’s spa before its official opening.

We spent the afternoon in the pool, followed by a delicious Thai meal before enjoying drinks on our balcony prior to sleep. What an unforgettable way to conclude our trip! Check availability and prices for Grand Resort Bad Ragaz.

Day 21 – Depart Zurich

The final day of our three-week road trip throughout Switzerland has come. The 90-minute drive back to Zurich from Bad Ragaz feels effortless, so based on your flight schedule, you may choose to indulge in more time at the spa in the morning or return early to catch your flight home.

Experiencing a road trip through Switzerland will forever remain one of the most remarkable journeys we’ve ever undertaken. We’ve traveled through Switzerland by train previously, finding it fast and efficient; however, the freedom to stop wherever we desire at scenic lookouts and explore hidden gems makes traveling through Switzerland truly special. If you plan a trip to Switzerland, be sure to spend at least some time driving to appreciate the country from an alternate viewpoint.
