Discover Suwehan Beach: A Hidden Gem in Nusa Penida, Bali

If you’re looking for a hidden beach with perfect white sand and turquoise waves, Suwehan Beach in Nusa Penida island is just the thing. It’s one of our favorite places anywhere in Bali.

There’s even a cool pointy rock that looks like a Christmas tree (or maybe an elf hat), and the locals recently built some tree houses where you can stay the night near the cliffs.

This travel guide will explain how to get there and everything you need to know before you go!

Suwehan Beach Nusa Penida

The hike down to Suwehan Beach is relatively short and straightforward, yet it offers a good workout. You start at the top of a steep cliff and descend many uneven rocky steps.

During my first visit to Suwehan in 2017, this stunning location was largely unknown. The final segment of the hike involved lowering yourself down on a precarious vertical rope, which was quite an adventure.

However, in 2018, a significant portion of the cliff (including the path) experienced damage from a landslide, attributed to the earthquake in Lombok.

Fortunately, when we returned in 2021, I was pleased to find that the path had been completely restored and is now safer than ever. The descent only takes about 20 minutes, and there are steps and railings lining the entire route.

Although the return climb is still steep and can be exhausting, the path’s safety allows you to enjoy one of the best beaches in Nusa Penida!

It is crucial to check the tide times with your accommodation or driver prior to your visit; at high tide, the beach becomes submerged, rendering it inaccessible. Therefore, aim for low tide to fully enjoy the beach experience.

The beach is breathtaking, sharing some characteristics with Diamond Beach, featuring pristine white sand, limestone cliffs, and a tall, photogenic rock known as the Jineng stone.

Most importantly, it remains a hidden gem. Consequently, you might find yourself enjoying the beach with fewer fellow travelers!

During our visit, we were lucky enough to spot manta rays, sea turtles, monitor lizards, and even a small shipwreck on the shore.

Suwehan Tree House

In 2018, locals constructed tree houses atop the Suwehan cliff. Presently, four of these tree houses are available, allowing visitors to spend the night in them!

Don’t anticipate luxury amenities; however, they offer an outdoor shower/bathroom, a small food shack for ordering meals, and the beds appear comfortable.

The highlight is the breathtaking view of the ocean and cliffs, conveniently located just a short distance from Suwehan Beach!

How To Get To Suwehan Beach

Suwehan Beach is situated on the southeast side of Nusa Penida island, accessible by car or scooter. Expect about a 1-hour drive from the main docks and accommodation in northern Nusa Penida.

Exercise caution when riding a scooter, as the roads are rough, and some areas may be hazardous if not approached carefully.

Nusa Penida Private Driver

For those wishing to explore Nusa Penida comfortably and safely, I recommend utilizing GetYourGuide. They offer a full day of driving and sightseeing in Nusa Penida (up to 8 hours) for 1-5 passengers, including the entire van, driver, and petrol.

We’ve often relied on GetYourGuide for numerous tours and activities globally, and they’ve consistently provided excellent service! Highly recommended.
