With an array of waterfalls across Southeast Asia, we present a selection of the most stunning that should not be overlooked during your exploration of these beautiful islands.

ERAWAN FALLS, THAILAND

This vivid emerald waterfall is located within Erawan National Park in Western Thailand, specifically in the Tenasserim Hills of Kanchanaburi Province. Immerse yourself in its captivating ambience and discover its various tiers, each leading to pools abundant with fish.

TIP: Consider visiting independently rather than through a guided tour. It is reachable via public transport.

KUANG SI FALLS, LUANG PRABANG, LAOS

This three-tiered waterfall, featuring a bridge at its summit, is situated south of Luang Prabang, beautifully concealed within the jungle. Bypass the organized tours, travel lightly, and ascend to the top for a breathtaking view of the cascading falls over limestone formations.

TIP: Be sure to visit the adjacent Asiatic Black Bear Rescue Centre, which provides sanctuary for several bears rescued from poachers and traffickers.

KUANG PHAPHENG FALLS, DON KHONG, LAOS

MAE YA WATERFALL (NAMTOK MAE YA), THAILAND

Situated two hours from Chiang Mai City, Mae Ya Waterfall resides within Doi Inthanon National Park. This refreshing waterfall cascades down 30 tiers of rock, accompanied by ethereal mist, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely afternoon picnic.

TIP: Although it is easily accessible, it is advisable to wear sturdy footwear.

WACHIRATHAN WATERFALL, CHIANG MAI, THAILAND

This secondary waterfall in Doi Inthanon National Park is another locale not to be overlooked! As part of the Himalayan mountain range in Northwestern Thailand, Wachirathan Waterfall is readily accessible via a brief trail near the parking area.

TIP: Upon closer inspection, you might observe a rainbow created by the mist of the falls on a clear day.

DETIAN-BANYUE FALLS, CHINA/BAN GIOC FALLS, VIETNAM

The Detian-Banyue Falls consists of two waterfalls located between the notable Karst Hills of Daxin County and the Trung Khanh District. Straddling the international boundary between China and Vietnam, the Detian-Banyue Falls can sometimes converge into a single grand cascade during the rainy season.

KAWASAN WATERFALLS, PHILIPPINES

If you have yet to discover this Instagram sensation, the time has come! Situated on Cebu Island in the Philippines, it is conveniently accessible by public transport or scooter. The 15-30 minute hike begins at Matutinao Church, meandering alongside the Kawasan River through local villages.

TIP: Due to its popularity among both locals and tourists, consider visiting during weekdays to avoid crowds, and do not succumb to “guides” offering assistance—you cannot miss the trail!

JEMBONG WATERFALL, BALI

Nestled in Central Bali, this hidden gem resides close to the more renowned—and typically more congested—Gitgit waterfall. Since commercial tour agencies have yet to include it in their itineraries, make the trip while it remains lesser-known! This location exudes a mystical atmosphere and offers an ideal photo opportunity for your Instagram feed.

TIP: Arrive early to capture the tranquility and avoid other visitors!

SEKUMPUL WATERFALLS, BALI

The seven waterfalls, known as Sekumpul (meaning ‘group’ in Indonesian), are located near the village of Sekumpul in Singaraja. If you haven’t yet navigated a scooter, consider hiring a driver for transportation (typically priced between $50-$75), taking about two hours from Seminyak.

TIP: Again, do not entertain the idea that hiring a “guide” is obligatory to access the area!

TUKAD CEPUNG WATERFALL, BANGLI, BALI

This enchanting waterfall is situated approximately 30 kilometers northwest of Ubud, near the Pura Dalem Penida Klod temple. It is easily reachable by descending 100 steps toward the river.

TIP: Avoid the hassle of navigating by hiring a driver while staying in Ubud!

TEGENUNGAN WATERFALL, BALI

This waterfall, located just 30 minutes from Denpasar, is unique in that it is the only one situated outside the highlands or mountains. Adventurous visitors may opt to descend to the foot of the waterfall, cross the river, and climb back up, while others may prefer to observe the stunning cascade from a distance!

TIP: The optimal lighting for capturing photographs occurs in the afternoon or evening, as the waterfall faces west!

SENDANG GILE AND TIU KELEP WATERFALLS, LOMBOK

These two waterfalls are positioned a three-hour drive north of Lombok International Airport. The first, Sendang Gile, is merely a 15-minute descent by foot from the park entrance (disregard the fact that you will need to ascend again!). Upon continuing to the second fall, Tiu Kelep, the trail eases and allows you to fully appreciate the picturesque surroundings of Mount Rinjani National Park during the final 30 minutes.

TIP: Wear shorts as you will need to walk through shallow waters to reach the second waterfall, and bring a waterproof bag for your valuables!
