Summary of Our Sri Lanka Experience
Enjoy our favourite Sri Lanka photos from our four different visits to one of our favourite countries!
We fell in love with Sri Lanka during our first visit in 2010. Since then, we have spent a month exploring this stunning island, traveling by trains, local buses, and tuk-tuks. Each of our subsequent visits has offered unique experiences and countless memorable Sri Lanka photos.
Sri Lanka in Photos
My, how Sri Lanka has evolved over the years, blossoming while still retaining its inherent charm and beauty.
Elephants of Sri Lanka in Photos
Sri Lanka is home to a significant population of elephants, and conservation efforts are essential for preserving their habitats. National parks and wildlife preserves across the island allow elephants to roam freely while offering tourists the chance to observe them in their natural environments.
While we encountered many elephants in national parks and sanctuaries, it was not uncommon to see them walking along railway tracks or sharing the streets with buses and motorcycles.
Experience the Trains
Riding the trains of Sri Lanka is a cultural experience in itself. These historical trains, dating back to the colonial era, meander through the picturesque highlands, providing stunning views.
Passengers often hang out of windows and doors, but we opted for the comfort of wooden benches.
Culture of Sri Lanka in Pictures
We were fortunate to embark on a helicopter tour over the breathtaking site of Sigiriya. This ancient rock fortress has origins dating back to the third century BC and is one of the most visited sites in Sri Lanka.
The climb to the top of the 370-meter high rock offers awe-inspiring views.
Adam’s Peak
One of our most unforgettable experiences in Sri Lanka was joining the annual Adam’s Peak Pilgrimage. Our journey began in the night, navigating past religious shrines of various faiths and local souvenir shops.
Wildlife of Sri Lanka
Enjoy Leopard Spotting at Yala National Park, where we witnessed breathtaking wildlife encounters, including a vibrant peacock displaying its magnificent feathers.
Interestingly, during our first two visits, we did not spot a sloth bear. However, their population is increasing, thanks to ongoing conservation efforts.
At the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, dedicated efforts are underway to nurture sea turtles, ensuring their safety by farming eggs and releasing the hatchlings back into the wild.
The Beauty of Kandy
Kandy, the ancient capital of Sri Lanka, should not be missed during your travels. The Royal Palace is a remarkable site that speaks volumes about the island’s history.
Beaches in Sri Lanka
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Hikkaduwa, a perfect base for exploring the beautiful coastline and making our way to Galle and Unawatuna. However, the highlight was lounging on the beach and learning to surf!
Arugam Bay is undoubtedly the finest beach in Sri Lanka, attracting seasoned surfers from around the globe.
The Famous Tea Terraces
Sri Lanka is renowned for its tea production, making it essential to spend time amid the tea terraces in Nuwara Eliya.
We hold a special place in our hearts for Sri Lanka, consistently ranking at the top of our recommended travel destinations.
Scenic Views of Sri Lanka
This stunning sunset photograph was captured in Tissa the day before embarking on our wildlife safari in Yala.
During our exploration, we were captivated by the beautiful countryside.
With tourism at an all-time high, luxurious resorts are emerging everywhere.
The hike to Ella Rock provides a perfect day trek, emphasizing the importance of spending time in the highlands.
We hope that these photos will inspire you to feel the same allure.
Despite the transformations, the land’s natural beauty and the warmth of the people remain unchanged.
