With all that is going on in the world, Egypt is often considered a no-travel zone, but Egypt is wonderful. The people are friendly and kind, the scenery is beautiful and the history is out of this world.

Ancient Egypt In Pictures

Are you ready to see Egypt? Having visited Egypt several times, we have been lucky enough to experience remote parts of the country from the seat of a bicycle, the back of a truck, and even in luxury with a private driver.

We started our cycling journey through Africa in Egypt back in 2008. We have backpacked on a budget and have been guest speakers at conferences where we experienced five-star service, capturing our unique adventures through photography.

1. Pyramids of Giza

Great Pyramid of Giza

Visiting the Pyramids of Giza is a must. They are truly magical, whether experienced at sunrise, sunset, or midday. These centuries-old monuments are awe-inspiring, so be sure to have your camera ready to capture unforgettable memories.

For an adventurous experience, consider hiring a camel for an alternative view of the pyramids and indulge in a quad bike and camel tour, fulfilling your fantasies of exploring the Sahara Desert.

2. Great Sphinx of Giza

The Sphinx stands as a fascinating guardian of the pyramids, representing a mythical creature that is half-man, half-lion, believed to embody King Khafre, the fourth king of the 4th Dynasty from 2575 BC.

3. Alabaster Mosque

The Great Mosque of Muhammad Ali, located in the Citadel of Cairo, is not to be missed. Built between 1830 and 1848, it adds to Cairo’s nickname as the City of Minarets. Be sure to enter and admire the mosque’s stunning interior.

4. Abandoned Mosque

While the Alabaster Mosque is the most visited in Cairo, there are many hidden gems. An abandoned mosque with polished marble became one of our favorite photos of Egypt.

5. Library of Alexandria

The Library of Alexandria boasts one of the greatest literature collections, complemented by striking modern architecture. Students gather to reflect on Egypt’s future while we capture its unique design.

Although it lies in an ancient city, it has been modernized, housing the world’s largest digital collection of historical manuscripts.

6. Ancient Burial of Saqqara

This site hosts one of Egypt’s largest funerary temples, where archaeologists discovered the oldest known coffins. Egypt is a treasure trove, with continuous archaeological discoveries enriching our understanding of its ancient history.

7. Alexandria Street Car

Did you know the Alexandria Tram System began operating in 1863? Surprisingly, many of its streetcars originated from Toronto, revealing a unique connection between a modern city and an ancient one.

8. Red Pyramid

Located 40 km outside of Cairo, the Red Pyramid offers an impressive experience that rivals the Pyramids of Giza. Here, visitors can even enter the center of this remarkable temple.

9. The White Desert

The White Desert is a breathtaking landscape resembling another planet. A visit to this protected area allows for a truly unique experience, reminiscent of ancient Bedouin life among striking chalky rock formations.

10. The Black Desert

In addition to the Sahara, Egypt also features the Sahra al-Suda, characterized by its mounds of black mountains creating a striking contrast against the surrounding sandy landscape.

A trip to Egypt would be incomplete without exploring the Valley of the Kings. Situated on the Nile, this historical site showcases King Tut’s Tomb and other famous royal burial sites.

This impressive temple is dedicated to female Pharaoh Hatshepsut, who ruled for 27 years. Built between 1490-1460 BC, it stands as one of Egypt’s architectural masterpieces.

Aswan, situated on the Nile, is an ideal base for exploration. Instead of taking a cruise, visitors can hire a felucca at reasonable prices, ensuring a personalized experience along the river’s scenic banks.

Luxor Temple, located on the Nile’s banks, is one of the best-preserved ancient temples in Egypt and a must-see for history enthusiasts. With over 800 archaeological sites, it is known as the “world’s greatest open-air museum.” Visitors can examine the Valley of Kings and Queens, the Luxor Temple, and the Karnak Temple Complex.

15. Karnak Temple

The Karnak Temple is another prominent site, originally constructed around 2055 BC and expanded over centuries. The Avenue of the Sphinxes connects it to the Luxor Temple, showcasing over 1,050 sphinx statues lined along this remarkable route.

16. Abu Simbel Temples

Located on Lake Nassar, Abu Simbel features Ramses II’s grand temple designed to showcase Egypt’s power. The entire temple was meticulously relocated during the construction of the Aswan Dam, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
