Situated along the Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik is encircled by the crystal-clear waters and beautiful beaches that make it an exquisite destination. The city is also home to charming islands, such as Lokrum, which features a delightful botanical garden and a 12th-century monastery.

A major highlight of Dubrovnik is its Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounded by medieval walls erected in the 13th century. A walk along these walls offers breathtaking views of the city. Notable attractions include Dubrovnik Cathedral, the Rector’s Palace, and the Sponza Palace. Furthermore, Dubrovnik served as a filming location for the popular series Game of Thrones.

2. Porto, Portugal

Northern Portugal’s Porto has gained immense popularity among travelers seeking European destinations. This charming city, located along the Douro River, showcases its medieval architecture amidst golden beaches and splendid boulevards. Over the years, Porto has evolved into a romantic getaway and is now one of the most frequented cities in Portugal. As you explore Porto, begin at the River Douro and wander its old town. Look for a traditional Fado performance in the charming streets or embark on a river cruise to view its medieval buildings from a unique perspective.

Strolling along the lively waterfront makes for a romantic evening, while enjoying port wine evokes nostalgia, with a funicular ride offering stunning panoramic views.

Paris is frequently recognized as one of the most picturesque cities globally. Indisputably a top romantic destination, our admiration for this city deepens with each visit. Though an often-repeated sentiment, Paris remains our quintessential beautiful city in Europe. It is among the few locales we frequently revisit. Regardless of the other cities we encounter, we remain enchanted by the City of Lights, marveling at various vistas of the Eiffel Tower. A champagne toast at its summit is a must-do experience.

4. Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen holds a cherished place in our memories. This captivating city invites exploration, featuring Tivoli Gardens, Nyhavn, The Little Mermaid, and scenic canals that contribute to its reputation as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. It feels like stepping into a fairytale.

Nyhavn is arguably the most picturesque waterfront among the Scandinavian cities we visited. This historic canal, located in the Old Town, is an essential stop in Copenhagen. The 17th-century townhouses lining the canal, adorned in vibrant colors, house historic sailboats.

5. Venice, Italy

Venice is a must-visit city in Europe, especially if you choose to journey independently rather than through a cruise. Spending a night in this enchanting city is a rewarding experience. Though the city is famed for its canals, the true adventure lies in navigating its maze of narrow cobblestone streets and hidden alleyways.

After spending six days in Venice, it quickly became one of our favorite cities in Europe. We often watched cruise lines and bus tours arrive for the day and leave without fully experiencing the allure of Venice. Exploring the canals via boat trips created an idyllic experience, while quiet moments over drinks on a bistro terrace felt almost dreamlike.

6. Athens

Athens boasts some of the world’s most renowned ancient ruins, including the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and The Ancient Agora. There’s nothing as remarkable as enjoying a drink at a rooftop bar in Monastiraki Square, with views of the Acropolis rising majestically over the city.

Many venues across Athens offer stunning city views, with rooftop bars and patios scattered throughout. For exceptional vistas, take the cable car to Lybitacus Hill. Choosing accommodation in the city center will allow easy access to prominent tourist attractions. Athens is among the most walkable capital cities in Europe, offering something for everyone, be it history, art, or simply the lively atmosphere of a city.

7. Budapest, Hungary

Set along the Danube River in Central Europe, the waterfront of Budapest captivates visitors. Crossing the chain bridge reveals the enchanting beauty of the dual cities of Buda and Pest. At night, Budapest transforms into a magical scene as the lights illuminate the skyline, reflecting in the waters below.

The Hungarian Parliament buildings take center stage in the capital, shining brightly at night while the Széchenyi Chain Bridge glimmers in its waters, creating a stunning spectacle. Budapest is renowned for its thermal baths and ruin bars, which enhance its unique appeal.

Florence is truly a city of art, recognized as one of the most beautiful locations in Europe. Sculptures and intricate architectural details are found at every turn. Brussels was one of the first European cities we visited, and the memory of our initial encounter with the iconic Old Town Square remains vivid. Upon rounding a corner to witness this remarkable square, we were left in awe. Our subsequent visit confirmed that the enchantment had not faded with time.

The entire old city center of Rome is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum, Pantheon, and St. Peter’s Basilica frequently appear on travelers’ wish lists. Visually stunning experiences abound in this European city. Rome is a must-visit destination that will surely impress travelers.

13. Prague, Czechia

Prague is often hailed as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, and our initial view confirmed this reputation. Although it can be bustling, stepping off the main path reveals tranquil spots to enjoy a meal or an affordable drink. Much like other European cities, the river provides spectacular vistas, with Prague Castle towering above the Charles Bridge spanning the serene Vltava River.

Awakening early allows for peaceful exploration of the city, offering the opportunity to enjoy the quiet town square, which is considered one of the most picturesque in Europe. We found it remarkable that the streets didn’t begin to fill until after 9:00 AM, granting us time to take in the architectural wonders and medieval churches in solitude.

14. Istanbul, Turkey

When gazing upon the city of Istanbul from our rooftop terrace at night, it dazzles with illumination. Istanbul embodies a unique blend of two worlds, combining European influences with Asian essence. Spanning two continents, it is the largest city in Europe. It is this eastern charm that enhances its appeal.

The cityscape features mosques peeking through the skyline, with the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia serving as iconic landmarks, while the Old City invites exploration through time. Stroll through the Grand Bazaar or ascend Galata Tower for breathtaking views of this vibrant city. A visit to Istanbul offers a rich cultural experience, embodying the seamless fusion of East and West.

15. London, England

Our fondness for London is rooted in its riverside allure, with Tower Bridge spanning the Thames. As with many cities, London’s prime attractions are largely situated near the water. Utilizing water taxis and ferries offers an exceptional view of the city’s beauty, complemented by its renowned museums. Over the past two decades, London has evolved into a harmonious blend of historic architecture and modern skyscrapers, resulting in one of the most eclectic skylines in Europe.

16. Dublin, Ireland

Initially, it took time for Dublin to secure its place on our list of beautiful cities, but it has become one of our favorite European destinations. When compiling this list, I initially considered only breathtaking skylines. However, after multiple visits, I recognized that beauty also stems from culture and the people. The River Liffey winds through the city’s heart, enhancing its charm.

Dublin presents gentle parks for retreats, castles to discover, and a vibrant pub atmosphere. With each visit, our appreciation for its beauty continues to grow.

17. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Dave and I traveled to Amsterdam before embarking on our blogging journey, yet it left an indelible mark. Known as the Venice of the North, it features enchanting canals that create picturesque scenes. The vibrant waterways contribute to its status as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, making it a perfect city for walking or cycling.

18. Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm is among our favorite Scandinavian cities. Sweden’s capital, situated on the Baltic Sea, captivates with its colorful buildings lining the waterfront.

One aspect we admire about Scandinavian cities is their amusement parks in central locations, with Stockholm featuring a picturesque setting along the river. This northern metropolis connects visitors to 14 islands, ensuring that a visit to Stockholm is an unforgettable experience.

19. Tallinn, Estonia

Although our visit to Estonia was brief, we were delighted to experience the beauty of Tallinn. If you’re touring Scandinavia, including Tallinn on your itinerary is a wise choice, as it ranks among northern Europe’s most beautiful cities.

Fascinating and rich in history, Tallinn was a pleasant surprise, exceeding our expectations. The journey to Iceland fulfilled a long-held dream, and its capital city, Reykjavik, is undeniably beautiful. As one of the smaller cities on our list, Reykjavik still offers ample charm. Reykjavik embodies quintessential Nordic characteristics and merits a few days of exploration.

With each visit to Barcelona, our admiration grows. Initially, we weren’t particularly fond of Gaudi’s designs, but a deeper understanding of his innovative, colorful, and whimsical architecture transformed our perception. Our visit to Vienna coincided with the holiday season, creating an unforgettable experience among its famous Christmas markets. The city dazzles with lights and festive activities, solidifying its reputation as one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals. From its magnificent architecture and impressive museums to its rich musical heritage and arts scene, it’s clear why Vienna is so revered.

With numerous beautiful cities to choose from in Portugal, Lisbon shines brightly. Located along the Atlantic coast, it features impressive structures such as the Belem Tower overlooking the Tagus River and the Jeronimos Monastery.

Meandering through the Alfama neighborhood reveals narrow streets and colorful homes, immersed in a vibrant cultural scene dominated by Fado bars. In contrast, the modern Baixa district boasts wide boulevards and elegant architecture, offering a unique blend of historic landmarks and contemporary designs, including the Vasco da Gama Bridge, the lengthiest in Europe.

27. Seville, Spain

During a road trip through Spain and Italy, we made a brief stop in Seville and wished we had prolonged our stay. One of the fascinating aspects of European cities is their preservation of historical areas. If you’ve visited before, you’ll find that Seville’s enchanting old city remains unchanged and just as beautiful.

28. Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki was our final destination on our Scandinavian adventure, and it, too, captivated us with its beauty. The Helsinki Cathedral serves as a focal point, towering over the colorful buildings that adorn the waterfront.

One of the charming attributes unique to Scandinavian cities is the presence of swimming pools right in the heart of the city, with Helsinki featuring a notable swimming spot along the canal. The pristine water quality invites a refreshing dip and, like many beloved cities, offers walkable streets, shopping opportunities, and countless cafes.

29. Basel, Switzerland

Switzerland hosts an abundance of beautiful cities, and we could not conclude our list of stunning European cities without highlighting Basel, our favorite. Nestled along the Rhine River, Basel showcases a perfect synthesis of historical and modern elements. The historical fabric of the Old Town harmoniously integrates with the city’s contemporary architectural designs.

Touring The Altstadt (Old City) allows visitors to experience the remarkable Basel Munster Cathedral, which embodies the soul of the city with its twin towers and red sandstone walls. The Rhine River flows through the city center, providing the best views of Basel—whether you opt for a boat tour or choose to swim in the river, an unforgettable experience awaits.

30. Edinburgh, Scotland

Set atop a series of extinct volcanoes and rocky formations, Edinburgh offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. The Old Town is particularly picturesque, characterized by its winding medieval streets and dominating castles and churches. The Royal Mile is renowned as the city’s oldest section.

Edinburgh Castle, an iconic fortress resting on volcanic rock, provides stunning panoramas of the city. Home to the Scottish Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny, it serves as a major attraction, while the Scott Monument, a striking Victorian Gothic structure, enhances the charm of this enchanting city.
