Exploring Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens
Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, Ohio, is a National Historic Landmark. The 65-room Tudor-style mansion was built in 1912 by Goodyear Rubber Company founder F.A. Seiberling and his wife Gertrude. Today, this gracious mansion and its elaborate gardens are open to the public, with a variety of special events hosted throughout the year.
History of Stan Hywet Hall
The name Stan Hywet derives from the Old English terms for “hewn stone,” not from an individual as commonly misattributed. Designed by Cleveland architect Charles Sumner Schneider, the 65-room Tudor Revival mansion was inspired by several mansions in Britain and took four years to complete, costing $150,000.
The Manor House
This stunning Tudor Revival mansion exudes an old-world elegance. Upon entering, you will notice the significant inscription above the doorway: “Not for us Alone.” This was the Seiberling’s motto, reflecting their hospitality as they welcomed dignitaries from government, entertainment, and business. The house is renowned for its intricate paneling, utilizing materials such as American oak, rosewood, and chestnut. Notable innovations in the home include a built-in vacuum system and a 37-station telephone/intercom system.
The Gardens
Set in an expansive landscape, the gardens at Stan Hywet Hall originally spanned over 1,000 acres and were designed by renowned American landscape architect Warren Manning. Currently, 70 acres accompany the estate, featuring a formal English garden, a vibrant wildflower meadow, and a curated Japanese garden. Meticulous planning ensures that something is always in bloom at Stan Hywet, offering continuous beauty throughout the seasons.
The Seiberling Family
F.A. Seiberling and his wife, Gertrude, raised their six children on this estate, although most were grown at the time of its construction. The estate was often enjoyed by their grandchildren. The Seiberlings’ eldest son, John Frederick, who later became a US Congressman, and his wife Henrietta resided at the Gate House. Henrietta played a pivotal role in introducing Bill W. and Dr. Bob Smith, supporting their efforts to create A.A. for alcoholics.
