Is the 27-Hour Silver Meteor Train Journey from Miami to NYC Worth It?

Traveling the Silver Meteor: A Scenic Journey from Orlando to New York City

It’s a common belief that Americans do not ride trains; they prefer to fly or drive for long distances. However, having traveled extensively across the country with an Amtrak pass, I can assert that many Americans indeed embrace train travel. A fascinating array of characters can be found aboard, each with their own stories. Some travelers opt for the train to avoid flying, others because they’ve lost their driving privileges, while many simply enjoy the leisurely journey, taking in the views with no rush to reach their destination.

Exploring the Silver Meteor Route

In late 2022, I embarked on the long-awaited 27-hour trip on the Silver Meteor, which departs Miami, Florida, at approximately 8 AM, concluding its journey at Moynihan Train Hall in New York City. This impressive station—an upgrade of Penn Station—opened in 2021 and offers travelers a more spacious environment.

This night train navigates through 31 stations and crosses several states including Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington D.C., Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, ultimately arriving in New York. Boarded from the historic Orlando Station, I was greeted by the tempting aroma of chili cheese dogs being grilled by a vendor, alongside the charming atmosphere of a vintage station filled with peppy gumball machines.

I was initially concerned about my ticket lacking a specific coach or seat assignment; however, I soon learned the efficient boarding process split passengers into solo and group lines, with attendants assigning seats based on our final destinations. With the locomotive departing Orlando at 1:30 PM to the rhythmic clanging of bells, we rolled past picturesque landscapes dotted with lakes and inviting small towns.

Departing Orlando

The train’s interior was impressive: wide aisles, comfortable seating, and several electrical outlets made for a pleasant journey. The designated café car buzzed with activity, filled with passengers enjoying snacks and beverages in the sociable atmosphere. I indulged in a delicious Angus cheeseburger for just $7.25, appreciating the backdrop of Spanish moss-draped trees rolling by my window.

Notably, Amtrak has made significant upgrades to the Silver Meteor, particularly in the dining car and new carriage designs. While private rooms and roomettes provide premium experiences, it’s important to note that the dining car has become less accessible due to staffing challenges, resulting in limited dining options for coach passengers. Nevertheless, conversations among fellow travelers flowed easily, with discussions ranging from travel tips to everyday life, fostering a strong sense of community.

While traveling the less heralded routes of the Silver Meteor, the glimpses of charming picket-fenced homes and wildlife along the water and wetlands are often enchanting. I experienced serene scenes of Spanish moss looming from ancient oaks alongside vibrant landscapes filled with flourishing plants. As we arrived in Savannah around 7:30 PM, the cozy atmosphere continued to captivate me.

Stopping in Savannah

Upon disembarking in Savannah, I embraced the lively energy of this historic city, taking a brief respite from the train. Passengers often use this opportunity to explore, as Charleston is another popular stop along this route. I spent my three-day visit immersing myself in local culture, indulging in delectable soul food, and rediscovering hidden gems in secondhand bookstores. Eventually, after a brief delay, I returned to an increasingly crowded Silver Meteor for the next leg of my journey.

Despite the hustle and bustle, the camaraderie among passengers remained palpable. As we approached Washington D.C., many passengers, eager to catch the views of the rising sun across the Potomac River, leaned into their seats. By the end of the trip, conversations had become friendly exchanges, with travelers sharing snacks and life stories. This unique bond formed during the journey felt like an irreplaceable part of the train experience.

The train ride culminates in an announcement as we enter the tunnel signaling our arrival in New York. The bustling atmosphere of Moynihan Train Hall welcomed us, bright and filled with life, capturing the essence of a city that never sleeps.

A ticket from Orlando to New York costs approximately $155 through Amtrak.
