Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) Luggage Allowance Guide

1. Summary

This article provides essential information on baggage rules for flying with Scandinavian Airlines, including carry-on and checked baggage allowances, weight limits, and fees. Prepare for your Nordic journey by understanding these guidelines to avoid any surprises at the airport.

Baggage Guidelines for Scandinavian Airlines

If you’re planning a trip to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, or Finland, or a combination of these Nordic countries, consider starting your adventure by flying on Scandinavian Airlines. This airline serves numerous cities across all four countries. Therefore, it is vital to understand the baggage allowances and rules well before you check in to ensure you pack appropriately and avoid facing unnecessary fines.

Carry-On Baggage

Scandinavian Airlines permits one carry-on bag. However, passengers in higher fare classes may bring more than one carry-on. The maximum dimensions for the carry-on must not exceed 22 x 16 x 9 inches (55 x 40 x 23 centimeters), and the weight should not be more than 17.6 pounds (8 kilograms). If you are flying to or from the United States or Asia in SAS Plus or Business, you may carry two bags, each weighing 17.6 pounds or less. Passengers can also bring on a handbag or laptop bag at no extra cost, provided it fits under the seat in front of you and does not exceed 16 x 12 x 6 inches (40 x 30 x 15 centimeters). Notably, any items purchased in the airport or at duty-free count as part of your baggage allowance.

For liquids and gels packed in carry-on bags, containers must not exceed 3.38 ounces (100 milliliters). Additionally, if you are aboard a smaller aircraft, you may be requested to leave your carry-on bag at the aircraft door. This bag will be checked at no cost and returned to you upon exiting the plane.

Checked Baggage by Ticket Type

If you are flying from the United States to any Scandinavian destination, it is likely that you will need to check at least one bag. Below are the rules regarding checked bags:

  • Go Light ticket: No checked bags allowed for free. Extra baggage benefits for EuroBonus Silver, Gold, Diamond, or Star Alliance Gold members do not apply.
  • SAS Go ticket: One checked bag up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms) allowed for free.
  • SAS Plus: Two additional bags, both weighing up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms) allowed for free. Note that additional costs may apply for interline itineraries between the United States and Scandinavian countries.
  • SAS Business class to or from the United States and Asia: Two checked bags, each up to 70 pounds (32 kilograms) permitted for free.
  • Children under 2 years: One bag up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms) allowed for free, plus a stroller, unless traveling on a Go Light ticket. However, checking one stroller for free is still allowed.
  • EuroBonus Silver and Star Alliance Gold members: One extra bag can be checked for free.
  • EuroBonus Gold and Diamond members: Two bags can be checked for free.

Limits and Fees

Passengers can check up to four bags; however, checking multiple bags will incur fees. Unsurprisingly, pre-paying for extra bags at least 22 hours before departure will cost less. The fees for extra bags vary based on your itinerary and fare class. For SAS Go flights in certain booking classes traveling to and from the United States, each extra bag costs $60 when purchased in advance and $110 when bought at the airport. Meanwhile, fees for SAS Business, SAS Plus, and other SAS Go flights are $89 if purchased in advance, rising to $109 when bought at the airport.

In cases where your luggage weighs more than 50 pounds but less than 70, overweight baggage fees will apply. The fee amount varies depending on your destination, but expect it to be around $50 per bag for flights between Asia and the United States.

Should you require traveling with more than four checked bags, it is necessary to arrange for shipping via cargo.

Other Baggage Considerations

If your luggage exceeds 70 pounds (32 kilograms), it will need to be sent via cargo. Similarly, oversized baggage with dimensions larger than 62 inches (158 centimeters) will also need to be shipped by cargo. For specific allowances regarding special baggage types like bicycles, sports equipment, or musical instruments, it is recommended to contact Scandinavian Airlines directly or explore their baggage policies for further details.
