However, the fair hosts a smaller spring event that is equally enjoyable yet much more approachable. The Washington State Spring Fair is an ideal family outing and particularly perfect for families with young children. The Washington State Spring Fair mirrors the state fair held in September, but on a smaller scale. A significant portion of the south side of the fairgrounds is closed for this event. Visitors will encounter fewer large animal barns and less of the typical vendors, yet the rides, stages, and exhibition areas such as the Showplex, Pavilion, and Expo Hall are fully operational. Consequently, because of this reduced scale, the spring fair tends to be less hectic and crowded, making it ideal for families with children.
It’s Cheaper Than the State Fair
While many events become increasingly expensive, the Washington State Spring Fair remains budget-friendly. Tickets typically cost under $10 for adults, and purchasing tickets online before the event can save you additional money compared to buying at the gate. Plus, parking is free on weekdays!

In contrast to the large and bustling September fair, the Washington State Spring Fair offers a smaller and more manageable experience. The compact layout allows for shorter walks for little ones. Additionally, fewer attendees often mean it’s easier to keep track of children in crowded spaces. Special family-oriented activities include Storybook Village for young children, Kidzone for older kids to learn about nature and science, and a STEM showcase.

Although the full September fair features an extensive lineup of rides, the spring fair provides enough attractions to keep visitors engaged, including the beloved and historic rollercoaster! There are a variety of midway rides available, catering to adults and teens. For younger children, Sillyville is a collection of rides designed specifically for kids two and older who wish to add excitement to their day.
There are Baby Animals Galore
Spring symbolizes new life, and the Washington State Spring Fair joyfully celebrates this with an abundance of baby animals! While there are many adult animals, visitors should especially look for adorable baby bunnies, chicks, and ducklings. A lively petting zoo invites children to interact with the animals up close and personal.
The Entertainment is Free
The spring fair may not feature a grand concert series like its September counterpart, but there is a wealth of smaller performances to delight attendees. Whereas state fair shows typically require tickets, all entertainment at the spring fair is complimentary. Guests can enjoy a range of performances, including dance routines, juggling acts, magic shows, and even an Elvis tribute! Performances take place on various stages throughout the fairgrounds, including the Coca-Cola stage near Hobby Hall, an outdoor stage by the blue gate entrance, and stages within the Pavilion and Expo Hall.
The Fair Food Game is Strong
If you’re craving fair delicacies like scones, elephant ears, funnel cakes, and other fried treats before September, the spring fair won’t disappoint! Most of the favorite foods are available, with the critical items being the scones! Visitors can indulge in a variety of fried delights, including elephant ears, Krusty Pups, piroshky, and Earthquake’s Burgers.
There are Fireworks on Friday and Saturday Night
If you stay at the spring fair until late on Friday or Saturday, you will be treated to a vibrant fireworks display to usher in spring. The shows usually commence around 9 p.m. after dark. Fireworks are launched from the Grandstand and can be viewed from most locations within the fairgrounds, provided there is no obstruction in your line of sight.
