Ultimate Guide to Visiting Rainbow Mountain, Peru

How to Visit Rainbow Mountain In Peru? Join Us!

When we resolved to explore Rainbow Mountain in Peru, it became an experience I both anticipated eagerly and dreaded. This is understandable given its stunning appearance in photographs.

While the excitement is straightforward—after all, it’s Rainbow Mountain—it is paired with a certain apprehension related to my holistic approach to physical challenges. It is not so much fear as a form of ‘performance anxiety,’ which is unfounded since hiking essentially comes down to putting one foot in front of the other, once the logistics and necessary supplies are in order.

We arranged our excursion through FlashpackerConnect. They have been operating in this region long before many others. During our search from the UK, they were the only viable option, and I am grateful for that as they managed everything expertly, even providing extra oxygen for possible altitude sickness.

Our excursion commenced early; we were picked up in Cusco from our accommodation at 2 am. After a three-hour drive, we arrived at the base point of our trek, long before dawn broke.

Upon arrival, we visited a local farmer’s hut where FlashpackerConnect had organized a substantial breakfast designed for climbers, which included teas and snacks for our trek ahead. Finally, we commenced our journey to Rainbow Mountain.

The Essential Items We Brought Along Included:

  • Waterproof gear previously used for hiking Huayna Picchu
  • Cameras
  • Water (2 liters per person)
  • Snacks including chocolates
  • Winter clothes such as hats, fleeces, jumpers, gloves, etc. (it tends to be cold in the mornings but warms up significantly by afternoon)
  • Sunglasses (though I didn’t utilize these)
  • Sunscreen and lip balms
  • Toilet paper and wet wipes
  • Personal medications
  • Proper hiking footwear

As we commenced the trek, the ascent began on rocky terrain before leveling out. The altitude—over 4,300 meters above sea level—makes physically demanding activities quite challenging due to the thin air. Consequently, even simple actions can leave one gasping for breath.
