One of the essential components of any visit to Singapore is to experience the iconic Singapore Sling! For those unfamiliar with this cocktail, there is no need for concern; it pertains to the realm of mixology rather than anything of questionable nature. The Singapore Sling is a cocktail steeped in history, recognized as one of the most renowned gin-based beverages. It was formulated prior to 1915 by Ngaim Tong Boon, a bartender at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel, Singapore. This cocktail not only has a century-long history, but one has the opportunity to savor it at the very same establishment, thereby engaging authentically with a significant aspect of Singapore’s cultural heritage.
After living in Singapore for several months, we undertook a quest to gather the details firsthand…
Upon arrival, one encounters the impressive and opulent colonial-style Raffles Hotel. It is undoubtedly one of the priciest and most exclusive accommodations available, so one should be prepared for considerable expenditure if intending to stay here!
Initially, we were uncertain about our destination, so we approached the hotel staff for assistance. They graciously guided us through the hotel grounds towards the bar, providing a perfect opportunity for us to appreciate the hotel’s surroundings. The ambiance evokes a nostalgic reminder of a historical era, leading me to half-expect a peacock to emerge from the foliage at any moment.
Eventually, we discovered the right bar! It appeared magnificent but was not the designated one—the location we sought was the Long Bar.
As the drinks were ordered, we opted to accompany them with some food. With gin being the quintessential British spirit, it felt entirely appropriate to indulge in some Fish ‘n’ Chips during our visit. Naturally, we also ordered buffalo wings… Why buffalo wings, you ask? Simply put, it was due to hunger—nothing more.
Upon the arrival of the Singapore Slings, I assure you—they tasted as delightful as they appeared! Though I typically do not partake in Maraschino cherries, I consumed it eagerly. This, I believe, is a testament to the quality of the cocktails.
The evening was further enhanced by the roasted peanuts provided. The customary practice here is to consume them out of the shell and simply discard the remnants onto the floor! The sheer number of nut shells accumulated was astonishing! At one point, I may have engaged in a bit of playful jumping just to hear the satisfying crunch. This likely drew a few puzzled or perhaps rather amused expressions.
In conclusion, this provides a comprehensive overview of where to find and how to indulge in one particular delicacy essential to Singapore—a delightful Singapore Sling!
