As a kid, hearing my mom say, “Go find your aqua socks,” was always thrilling. This meant adventure was on the horizon, especially in Door County, Wisconsin.
Even before terms like “screen time” surfaced, I knew I wasn’t exactly an outdoorsy child. Typically, our family vacations revolved around water parks and arcades. However, trips to Door County were special. They allowed me to embrace the outdoors, interacting with baby goats and skipping stones instead of loitering at malls.
These visits were thanks to my best friend Jenna, who came from a family passionate about the great outdoors. Her parents owned a charming lakeside cottage near Sturgeon Bay, where we spent summers hiking, biking, and kayaking.
We also spent countless nights playing games or gazing at the stunning northern lights. After bonfires by the beach, Jenna’s dad would teach us about the mysteries of the aurora borealis. Such memories have inspired me to introduce my own child to the joy of Door County.
If you’re considering a similar adventure—reconnecting with nature or enjoying an epic Midwestern summer vacation—here are my practical tips:
Step 1: Choose Where to Base Yourself

For instance, if you settle on the eastern side adjacent to Lake Michigan, you can easily drive to the Green Bay coastline for an afternoon of shopping or wine tasting.
