Hiking the Pipeline Canyon Trail offers stunning views of Lake Pleasant, provides a good workout on a rocky, rolling path, and may give you an opportunity to encounter wild burros.
1. Getting There
To reach the trail from the Phoenix area, take Lake Pleasant Road, head west on Carefree Highway to Castle Hot Springs Road, then turn onto Cottonwood Lane to access the Pay Station and proceed to the trailhead near the restrooms.
2. Exploring Lake Pleasant Park
Lake Pleasant Park features a variety of activities including camping, boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, picnicking, and wildlife observation. The Lake Pleasant Visitor Center educates visitors about the region’s history and desert wildlife.
3. Details of Pipeline Canyon Trail
This trail is primarily exposed to the elements, consisting of rolling, rocky terrain that is well-maintained. A floating bridge connects different segments of the trail. We opted for an out-and-back hike covering 2 miles for a total distance of 4 miles.
We delighted in the towering Saguaro cacti, the fresh blooms following winter rains, and the beautiful ocotillo and teddy bear cholla. The vistas of Lake Pleasant from this trail are truly impressive!
4. Wild Burros in the Area
While some hikers reported sightings of wild burros, we only heard their distant calls. These burros are believed to be descendants of pack animals that were either escaped or released during the late 1800s. Originally used to transport mining tools, there are now approximately 250 wild burros in the vicinity, each measuring up to 10 hands high.
5. Facilities Available
There are ample facilities along the Pipeline Trail, including restrooms and parking at both ends of the trail, as well as nice covered picnic tables.
6. Fees and Visiting Hours
The park is open 24/7 throughout the year. The entry fee for hiking or picnicking is $5.00. Several annual passes are offered for Lake Pleasant Regional Park, varying by the number of days per week allowed for visits and the number of watercraft that can be included. 7. Recommendations for Hikers
It’s advisable to wear sturdy boots and consider carrying a walking stick if you are prone to slipping or tripping on rocky surfaces. The trail can be challenging at various points and is best enjoyed during winter months or cooler times of the day due to limited shade.
