We walked through the Siq not knowing what to expect.
We hadn’t really done a lot of research on Petra before visiting the ruins, so it was all a complete surprise to us as we followed the crowd to the Treasury.
We imagined that we had stepped back in time. The stones that we were walking upon were the original stones of Petra, leaving us completely in awe of our surroundings.
As the twilight sun provided a golden hue, we could still make out the tops of the towering cliffs above.
Candles placed in paper bags lit our path all the way through the Siq of Petra. This 2 km walk is an unforgettable experience. Although it feels as if you will never reach the Treasury, once you do, the journey is worth every moment.
Each candle is hand lit, creating an authentic experience that transports visitors back centuries.
The ancient Nabatean City was a secret of Jordan that remained undiscovered by the western world until 1812. Bedouins had utilized this majestic location for centuries, yet it lay hidden from outsiders until two centuries ago.
Petra will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2012; being a spectacular ancient city, it is a must-see destination. If you have the chance to visit Petra, ensure that you experience it at night.
Once you reach the Treasury, you’ll be treated to the sounds of traditional Bedouin music. Men serve tea as you relax on mats. To capture the best photos, arrive early for prime positioning and stay after the crowds leave to photograph the Treasury without the interference of others.
We lingered after the crowd departed to catch breathtaking images of an empty Petra, including the Treasury and Siq, providing a stunning photo opportunity.
