Where To Stay In Nusa Penida

Peguyangan Waterfall Hike

Similar to most hikes in Nusa Penida, the trek to Peguyangan Waterfall commences at the top of a substantial limestone cliff along the coast.

The descent takes approximately 30 minutes and is relatively straight forward. However, the uphill climb is steep and can be quite strenuous. As you make your way down the vibrant blue stairway, you will encounter an old Hindu temple at the base of the cliffs.

The first two sets of blue stairs are made of sturdy metal, offering spectacular views of the Penida coastline. From this vantage point, you can spot the triangular boulder at Batu Siha Beach in the distance.

The final section of the stairway at Peguyangan is crafted from wood and extends directly over the ocean, where waves crash against the rocks below.

Additionally, beneath the main stairway lies the remnants of an older stairway that collapsed prior to the construction of the existing one.

However, proceed with caution; the drop-offs can be hazardous, and certain areas of the stairs are in questionable condition. It’s important to hike at your own risk!

If you weigh over 100 kilos (220 lbs), it might be wise to reconsider this hike due to safety concerns. The wooden stairs were designed for locals, averaging under 70 kilos (150 lbs), and the site has not been well maintained over the years.

My first experience hiking here in 2017 was fraught with challenges, as I wore damp sandals, leading to precarious footing. I feared slipping through the gaps between the stairs!

Consequently, if you’re planning to take a swim in the pool at the bottom, it’s advisable to keep your footwear dry for the return hike; it can significantly impact your safety and comfort.

We revisited this hike in 2021, and it didn’t seem as daunting as I initially remembered. Focusing on maintaining three points of contact can provide stability and safety.

Entrance Fees

As of 2024, there is no entrance fee to visit Peguyangan Waterfall; however, a small fee is charged for sarong rentals, necessary for temple entry.

Sarongs can be rented from the parking area for 15k Rupiah (~$1 USD) or you may bring your own for free. This ensures you are appropriately attired to respect the sacred site.
