Visit the Waterfalls of the Ozarks in Arkansas

Jack Moyer recalls a winter morning when he hiked to Twin Falls just as the sun was rising. “Snow was still on the ground, but it had just rained, creating a thick mist over the falls,” he shared. “Visibility was limited to about fifteen feet; the valley felt cool and clean. It was a breathtaking place, isolated and tranquil.”
With 15 years of hiking experience in Arkansas’s Ozark Mountains, Moyer has become accustomed to the region’s surreal landscapes.

The Ozarks, a mountainous area that extends through parts of Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas, has shaped many small southern towns into hubs for outdoor activities. Eureka Springs serves as an excellent base for visitors.
“I prefer hiking in winter to summer,” Moyer states. “My ideal months are November and December, when the leaves have fallen but wildlife abounds. We often spot deer, elk, and Trumpet Swans.”
Often overshadowed by the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Appalachian Mountains to the east, the Ozark Mountains are a hidden gem. This 1.2 million-acre area is rich with deep caves, rushing rivers, and unique translucent amphibians, making it an oasis for boaters, backpackers, anglers, rock climbers, and mountain bikers.
The Ozarks boast the tallest mountain between the Rockies and Appalachia, Dewey Bald Mountain, as well as many stunning waterfalls.
Hiking to Hemmed-In Hollow

Among the most impressive waterfalls are Hemmed-In Hollow, Eden Falls, and Twin Falls. The hiking trails traversing the region’s deep valleys and rocky canyons vary in difficulty, making them suitable for everyone from casual walkers to experienced backpackers.
Terry Cook, Director of The Harrison Convention and Visitors Bureau, notes, “Some sections of the trail to Hemmed-In Hollow require you to pull yourself up by tree roots. It’s one of the most arduous trails; many campers hike in, spend the night at the falls, and exit the following day.”
Cook, a resident of Harrison for seven years, has fond memories of hiking and canoeing in the Buffalo River area with his family. He now plays a pivotal role in promoting tourism in the region.

Hemmed-In Hollow, formed by a tributary of the Buffalo River, cascades down a 200-foot sheer cliff. It creates an awe-inspiring visual as the water is tossed by the wind, resulting in a myriad of sparkling droplets.
Three established hiking trails lead to Hemmed-In Hollow, with Centerpoint and Compton Trailheads being the most well-known. The falls are also reachable from the Buffalo River, just half a mile from the river trailhead.
The Magic of Falling Water
While Hemmed-In Hollow is the largest and steepest waterfall in the area, the title for beauty and serenity belongs to Triple Falls. A short, easy hike from the Camp Orr Boy Scout Camp reveals this treasure. Like most waterfalls in the Ozarks, it’s best to plan your visit in accordance with recent rainfall to witness its full glory.
“I love visiting Triple Falls in early spring when the snow melts and the falls are rushing. It’s reminiscent of those Caribbean waterfalls in commercials,” Moyer expresses. “The deep blue lagoon beneath it is stunning, enhanced by three distinct cascades. It almost feels tropical. Plus, it’s easily accessible, only a quarter-mile hike from the road.”
The falls are about four feet tall, inviting families to wade in the lagoon during the summer.

Triple Falls is located within the Buffalo National River Wilderness Area, accessed via a dirt road. During rainy periods, the stream flows robustly over rocks, forming the three picturesque cascades.
Eden Falls, another stunning waterfall, features a unique natural formation accompanied by rich history. Located near Triple Falls, it flows from high, moss-covered rocks into a narrow crevice.
“It’s about a mile hike to Eden Falls and absolutely worth it,” says Cook. “There are several levels to explore, and on the upper right side, remnants of an ancient Indian camp persist. Evidence of habitation can still be observed.”
The water has sculpted deep caverns into the rock, resulting in another small waterfall at the cave’s entrance, making it a wonderful area for exploration, whether hiking alone or with family.
Eden Falls lies within the Lost Valley section of the park and is a relatively easy hike from the trailhead.

The Gateway To The Buffalo River
For many adventurers, the journey to the Ozark hiking trails, rivers, and waterfalls begins in the vibrant town of Harrison. Positioned in the heart of the Ozarks, Harrison provides everything needed to immerse oneself in the captivating essence of the surrounding wilderness.
Surrounded by the Ozark forest, the nearby mountains contribute to Harrison’s unique culture and character. The town is filled with positivity and constantly buzzes with adventure. In late spring and summer, it offers a variety of dining and lodging options, including cabins, bed and breakfasts, and RV parks.
Each summer, local residents gather to organize and informally ‘guide’ a hike along the Buffalo River Mouth. Numerous outfitters in town specialize in canoeing and kayaking excursions on the Buffalo River.
Harrison captivates visitors with its energetic atmosphere. “It reminds me of a high-strung Colorado town,” Moyer says. “The focus is on outdoor adventure, and the town radiates positive energy. It has evolved into a hiking-centered destination, catering to diverse visitors.”
The trails accessible from Harrison have delighted families and locals for generations.
“My wife is a much more adventurous hiker than I am,” Moyer confides. “I prefer shorter hikes with our kids and dog. Our Great Dane thoroughly enjoys the woods. Though our teenagers are sometimes reluctant, when we manage to convince them to join us, they always have a terrific time.”
If you’re seeking a new vacation experience, consider the Ozarks. This breathtaking wilderness remains largely unspoiled, boasting hiking trails that rival the best in the U.S., stunning waterfalls, and a welcoming atmosphere.
