Aleksander Ilievski is a singer with Norwegian metal bands Imaginator and Empty. Jonas Bendiksen photographed Ilievski and many others for his portrait series “Singing Norwegian Singers.” It’s on exhibition through October 27 at the Leica Gallery Mayfair in London.
Jimmy “Ofu Khan” Ivan Bergsten is with the bands Red Harvest and Waklevoren. “There are variations on (Norwegian metal) — some more symphonic, some more stripped down and brutal,” Bendiksen said. “But overall it is pretty brutal and in-your-face music. That’s why I tried to photograph it a bit brutally as well.”
Kaahrl Odemark is from The 3rd Attempt. At Bendiksen’s exhibition, he includes sound files with each singer’s photo.
Sverre Daehli from Audiopain. “Some say (extreme metal) is the biggest cultural export from Norway,” Bendiksen said. “Whether that be true or not, the volume of records sold is enormous and the big Norwegian metal bands play gigs all over the world.”
