The Norfolk Hotel Nairobi: A Historic Landmark in Kenya

Have you ever stayed in a place where you could feel the history all around you? A place that feels frozen in time, where signs of a more decadent era can be seen at every turn? That is exactly how we felt staying at Fairmont, The Norfolk Hotel Nairobi.

History at the Norfolk Hotel Nairobi

Fairmont The Norfolk has played a key role in Kenya’s history.

Why are we discussing this specific hotel? Well, Nairobi literally grew up around the Norfolk. It is said that if there wasn’t a Norfolk Hotel, there may not have been a Nairobi! If there wasn’t a Nairobi, who knows what Kenya’s history would be.

Nairobi, Kenya History

The British Empire established Kenya as a colony in 1895, and Nairobi became a strategic point in the construction of the railroad from Mombasa to Lake Victoria.

Consequently, it slowly transformed into an epicenter for travelers heading to Kenya. Despite being a young city, barely over 100 years old, it started with 30,000 Indian laborers working under British colonial rule.

These laborers set up campsites at this storage depot and shunting ground where train lines were switched, and over a brief period, Nairobi grew in an unplanned and unexpected way.

Officially becoming a city in 1899, just five years later, the Norfolk Nairobi was constructed. It was the first hotel in the city and the primary meeting point for all new arrivals.

Norfolk Nairobi History

Kenya posed numerous challenges for early settlers. It was hot, dusty, and fraught with diseases and hardships. However, the Norfolk Hotel provided them with respite from these difficult conditions. They could find solace in its cool baths and garden oasis.

Norfolk Hotel a Garden Oasis

Even today, the Norfolk still exudes the charm of a garden oasis. The grounds feature an open concept around a lush green courtyard showcasing items from a bygone era.

One can imagine historical figures like Teddy Roosevelt or Ernest Hemingway relaxing here, planning their latest safari. To this day, it remains the main starting point for adventurers heading to the rich wildlife reserves of Kenya.

Easy Access to Elephant Orphanage

Before embarking on a safari, guests should visit the Elephant Orphanage. The Norfolk offers tours, allowing visitors to see the baby elephants up close before heading out on safari.

It’s disheartening to know that poaching still endangers elephants for their ivory. By visiting the orphanage, you are aiding in the rehabilitation of these orphans who tragically lost their mothers and contributing to the fight against poaching in Africa.

Over time, safaris have evolved greatly. Initially attracting the rich and famous or big game hunters, today’s tourists come equipped with cameras and long lenses, hoping to glimpse African wildlife in its natural environment.

Great Base before Kenya Safaris

No longer hunting the Big 5 in Kenya

Today, hunting the Big 5 for trophies is no longer the norm in Kenya. Tourists now seek photographic opportunities, aiming to observe African animals in their natural habitats.

The Norfolk serves as the ideal retreat to relax before and after a safari, maintaining its status as the most popular hotel in Nairobi.

The Thorn Tree Cafe, Nairobi

Site of the historic thorn tree

Located only a few blocks from downtown, it is easily accessible by foot. Within minutes, you can be in the heart of the city enjoying a coffee at the iconic Thorn Tree Café.

This café housed Nairobi’s first post office and is famous for the thorn tree at its center, where travelers would leave notes for one another. Long before the digital age, this was a means of communication among travelers.

This establishment evolved into an African institution and played a significant role in Kenya’s history.

Though the original tree has long since been replaced, it remains a fascinating stop for visitors. Hemingway himself frequented this spot, observing the world around him, and you can do the same; it continues to be the most famous gathering place in all of Africa.

Nairobi’s History

Our Kenya Guide Makau

Nairobi boasts a rich and colorful, albeit dark past. Africans faced oppression under British rule, and it was not until 1963 that Kenya finally achieved independence.

The Norfolk Hotel Nairobi has played a part in this dark history. In 1980, the hotel fell victim to a bombing that destroyed 25% of its structure.

Fortunately, it was rebuilt within a couple of years and is now under the management of the prestigious Fairmont Group. Familiar names in Canada, such as The Royal York and the Banff Springs Hotel, are part of the same group.

The Fairmont consistently acquires premier properties in various countries, and the Norfolk is no exception.
