Content Summary
Our appreciation for South African culture is profound, particularly when it comes to its culinary experiences. Consequently, exploring some of the hidden dining gems in Cape Town seems like a perfect way to combine our passions. Having journeyed to Cape Town and ventured to the Cape Peninsula a few months ago, we enjoyed delightful wine, mingled with local penguins, and explored the breathtaking cliffs and shorelines of this exquisite region.
Unfortunately, our visit to Cape Town was devoid of the insightful guidance that comes with local culinary expertise. Reflecting on this, we recalled a lovely contact, Annika from The Midnight Blue Elephant, who graciously provided her insider recommendations for future visits.
A Local’s Guide From Annika
Explore the outstanding culinary experiences recommended by a local in Cape Town below.
Certain regions are celebrated for their remarkable cuisine; however, South Africa does not typically surface in the minds of many travelers. It is only after savoring a South African dish that individuals come to appreciate the gastronomic treasures available.
Cape Town and its surrounding winelands present a culinary landscape that appeals to a variety of palates and budgets—this versatility is what enhances the charm of the city! While I might be biased, it is genuinely challenging to have a poor dining experience in Cape Town. Hence, I aim to showcase the finest culinary venues that I frequently patronize in my beloved city.
1.) YARD, also referred to as The Dog’s Bollocks – 6 Roodehek St, Gardens
Renowned for its burgers, YARD is a must-visit spot for both locals and visitors. Make sure to arrive early; the owner, Nigel, serves a limited quantity of 55 burgers each night. Expect a straightforward yet awe-inspiring selection of sliders reminiscent of Brooklyn’s garage style.
2.) Babel at Babylonstoren – R45, Paarl
Babylonstoren is not merely a notable wine estate; it boasts the most exquisite and delectable gardens in the Western Cape. At Babel, their restaurant, the menu highlights ingredients sourced straight from their gardens, making the farm-to-table experience authentically refreshing.
3.) La Perla – Beach Rd, Sea Point
With waitstaff attired in pristine uniforms, this established venue, La Perla, offers a refined ambiance along the Sea Point promenade. Savoring bubbly beverages while gazing at the ocean, guests can indulge in local classics such as grilled calamari and baby beef.
4.) El Burro’s Taqueria – 1, New church St & Kloof Nek Rd, Tamboerskloof
El Burro is a well-established favorite for lively and nearly authentic Mexican cuisine. They have recently expanded with a small Taqueria that indisputably serves the finest tacos around. I particularly recommend the chilorio pork and the delightful ceviche!
5.) Massimo’s – Oakhurst Farm Park, Main Rd, Hout Bay
Massimo’s offers pizza so extraordinary that it justifies a trip to Hout Bay: thin, crispy with spectacular topping combinations. Watch for their bottomless pizza nights, and remember to order the chocolate liquor trio for dessert.
6.) Tjing Tjing Tori – 165 Longmarket Street, City Bowl
Tjing Tjing has evolved from a premier bar to an essential destination for Asian tapas. Patrons can unwind in a soothing blue oasis, relax, and indulge in a variety of offerings, such as the agedashi tofu and the deep-fried rare beef fillet.
7.) Kyoto Garden Sushi – 11 Lower Kloofnek Road, Tamboerskloof
Kyoto Garden is the premier destination for authentic Japanese seafood and sushi. It offers a straightforward yet exquisite experience. Be sure to try the exotic grilled mushroom accompaniment and the Dirty Ninja Saketini.
8.) Lefty’s – 105 Harrington St, Zonnebloem
Characterized as a quintessential dive bar, Lefty’s excels at crafting the perfect G&T embellished with a slice of cucumber, in addition to serving delightful dishes such as chicken and waffles.
9.) Tamboerswinkel – 3 De Lorentz Street, Tamboerskloof
A seemingly modest chicken pie for lunch becomes remarkable when served in deconstructed style at Tamboerswinkel. Pair it with grilled chicken and a carefully curated bottle from their exceptional wine collection, and you’re well-equipped for an enjoyable dinner.
10.) La Colombe – Silvermist Wine Estate, Constantia Main Rd, Constantia
For those aiming to indulge in an extraordinary dining experience, La Colombe offers that opportunity. Under the culinary direction of chef Scot Kirton, each dish is exquisitely crafted and is either manifest in a plate, a can, or even an oyster shell. Consider utilizing Uber for transportation, opt for a wine pairing, and prepare for an unforgettable evening!
More about Annika
My name is Annika, a globetrotter with a spirited heart and an affinity for exploration.
Having resided in New York and South Africa for several years, I am presently based in Hamburg where I work as a freelance photo producer and blogger, freeing me to indulge in my passion for travel—my ultimate joy arises from sipping wine and practicing yoga simultaneously. I often captivate others with my humorous storytelling ability—at least, that’s what I’ve been told!
If I were to endorse the term ‘barefoot luxury,’ it would embody my essence; however, I prefer to pacify inaccuracies concerning its importance. I define my travel approach as an intriguing fusion of audacity and elegance. For me, genuine luxury centers on authentic experiences rather than monetary expenditures. I seek adventure through street food, aspire to travel sustainably, and prefer to listen more than I speak. Nevertheless, I do indulge in champagne, enjoy uniquely historical accommodations, and appreciate artisan goods enriched with narratives.
In fact, I have an eye for locations that possess a unique character, along with a penchant for sharing them. And yes, I savor real truffles! The Midnight Blue Elephant encapsulates a range of experiences—be it a story, a physical reminder, or those cherished travel insights. Here’s to embarking on journeys and exploring our vast world together! 🙂
