Mississippi City Offers Cash Incentives for Remote Workers to Relocate

The city of Natchez in Mississippi is aiming to attract new residents through its innovative incentive program, Shift South. This initiative allows remote workers to receive up to $6,000 when they choose to relocate.

Perched on the bluffs of the Mississippi River, Natchez is the latest city to launch an incentive program aimed at fostering community growth. The Shift South program has 30 slots available for remote workers interested in making this vibrant town their new home. To qualify, newcomers must purchase a house valued at a minimum of $150,000 and commit to living in Natchez for at least a year. In exchange, they will receive an upfront payment of $2,500 to assist with moving expenses, followed by $300 monthly for a year.

Individuals seeking an escape from the high costs of major cities may find Natchez appealing due to its low cost of living. As noted by America’s Most Liveable Towns and Villages, Natchez boasts a cost of living index that is below average. A typical home is priced around $100,000, significantly lower than the national average of $214,800.

Natchez is renowned as the oldest city along the Mississippi River, predating New Orleans by two years. The town features numerous historic sites, such as the Forks of the Road, commemorating its African-American heritage, as well as St Mary’s Basilica, Natchez National Historical Park, and the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians, which collectively attract thousands of visitors annually. Despite its complex history, Natchez is celebrated for being one of the most diverse and inclusive cities in Mississippi.

Additionally, Natchez is surrounded by picturesque landscapes, featuring lakes, forests, and abundant wildlife, making it an excellent location for outdoor activities like hiking and biking—especially along the scenic Natchez Trace Parkway. In recent years, the downtown area has experienced a vibrant revival, with new establishments such as cafes, restaurants, wine bars, and bakeries. Weekends are lively, with beer halls often echoing the sounds of live music, notably blues. A historic favorite, the Under the Hill Saloon, also boasts a literary legacy as a favored bar of author Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain.
