Understanding the Legal Gambling Age in Metro Detroit

It varies from 18 to 21 for local casino gaming, horse racing and the lottery

Metro Detroiters have several opportunities to win big or lose large in the area’s various gambling pursuits. In addition to the Michigan Lottery and horse racing, there are a few casinos in and near Motor City. The minimum gambling age for each of these ranges from 18 to 21. So get ready for fun; we’re about to let recent high school graduates (and their parents) know when they’re on their way out of the gambling starting gate.

Caesars Windsor

Legal Gambling (and Drinking) Age: 19

The Caesars Windsor is operated by Caesars Entertainment and owned by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. Because the casino-hotel complex is located in Ontario, the minimum age for gambling and drinking is established by that Canadian province. And that age is 19, which gives this establishment an edge over more restrictive Michigan facilities. Clever Canadians!

Detroit Casinos

Legal Gambling Age: 21

Casinos elsewhere in Michigan are permitted by virtue of compacts with Native American tribes. However, the passage of Proposal E in 1996 paved the way for state legislation allowing operation of three Detroit casinos—MotorCity, MGM Grand and Greektown.

All three fall under the requirements of the Michigan Gaming Control & Revenue Act of 1997, according to which the Michigan Gaming Control Board provides for the licensing, regulation, and control of casino gaming operations of these licensed commercial casinos within the city limits of Detroit.

All three offer luxurious facilities as well as first-rate gaming operations and amenities.

Outlying Casinos

Legal Gambling Age: 18 to 21

Michigan casinos located outside Detroit are all authorized under compacts with Native American tribes. Each tribe is considered a sovereign nation, consequently free to establish a minimum gambling age of 18 or older at its casino. This means the minimum gambling age varies by casino. As with Detroit casinos, the facilities are luxurious, and the gaming operations and entertainment are first-rate. For those casinos within an easy driving distance of Metro Detroit, the minimum gambling ages are as follows.

Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort

Horse Racing

Legal Gambling Age: 18

Michigan Lottery

Legal Gambling Age: 18

The Michigan Lottery allows participants to purchase lottery tickets from physical retail locations and online. The Michigan Lottery reports that more than 97 cents of every dollar spent on Michigan Lottery tickets is returned to the state in the form of contributions to the state’s School Aid Fund, prizes to players, and commissions to retailers.

Since its inception in 1972, the Michigan Lottery has contributed more than $19.6 billion to education in Michigan.
