Memphis International Airport Overview
Few people know that Memphis International Airport (MEM) is the busiest cargo airport in North America and the second-busiest in the world. FedEx alone operates approximately 400 flights per day, delivering around 180,000 packages. Moreover, UPS is expanding its presence with a campus capable of sorting almost 60,000 packages per hour.
For human passengers, the airport is quite manageable. In 2018, approximately 4 million people traveled through its four runways. All major airlines, including American, Delta, Air Canada, Southwest, Frontier, and United, operate at MEM. Although Memphis was once a hub for Northwest Airlines with many direct flights, most current services may require connecting through other airports.
Know Before You Go
The airport consists of three concourses: A, B, and C. While check-in and security occur in your assigned concourse, all areas interconnect post-security, allowing easy access to restaurants, bars, and shops.
Although the airport normally experiences a calm atmosphere, it can get busy during peak times. After checking your baggage or if you are carrying only personal items, feel free to seek a different concourse’s security checkpoint if lines are excessively long.
MEM is known for being friendly and safe, providing various amenities for travelers. Family restrooms and pet relief areas are available in the B terminal. Additionally, volunteers, known as the Blue Suede Service, can assist with local knowledge and aviation expertise. Look for individuals in navy blue vests and khaki pants to answer any questions you might have.
Airport Parking
Memphis International Airport provides both short-term and long-term parking options across two covered facilities. The well-lit parking garages offer a service for car trouble; the airport claims to have jumpstarted over 1,000 vehicles in 2018. Free luggage carts are available near the elevators on each garage level, and 134 accessible parking spaces are designated for travelers with disabilities. Payments can be made using cash, debit, or major credit cards.
- Economy parking: $6 a day. It’s free for under 30 minutes.
- Short-term parking: $24 a day.
- Long-term parking: $15 a day.
