Summary
It is commonly stated that, “It’s the journey that matters, not the destination.” In the case of Sagres Queenscliff, both elements hold true.
Upon our arrival in Melbourne, we opted for a scenic journey to the Mornington Peninsula, relishing the picturesque coastal roads. We made several stops to appreciate the beautiful beaches, cafes, wineries, restaurants, and scenic viewpoints offering panoramic vistas of the Melbourne skyline across the bay, ultimately reaching the car ferry that runs hourly from Sorrento to Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula.
The ferry serves as a tranquil means of covering distance, allowing passengers to enjoy coffee (or wine, depending on the time) while keeping an eye out for dolphins in the boat’s wake. Stepping into Queenscliff feels like a journey back in time. The town is filled with historical landmarks; from the operational 150-year-old steam train to military barracks and preserved relics dating back to 1853. The main thoroughfare of Queenscliff is remarkably well maintained, and a leisurely stroll along the shops, admiring antiques in the windows while savoring Australia’s esteemed award-winning pie, is highly recommended.
THE HOUSE
A single word encapsulates Sagres Queenscliff: Spectacular!
Upon entry through its private gates, visitors are greeted by a long, meandering driveway lined with trees and flowers, leading to the main entrance of this three-story luxury residence.
Illuminated by natural light, Sagres is a true gem situated along the Queenscliff coastline, positioned just above the sand dunes of Nuns Beach, allowing one to feel as if they are directly on the beach. Overlooking the Port Phillip Bay channel, an exciting array of vessels can be seen sailing by, guided by busy pilot boats steering container ships, cruise liners, and the beloved “Spirit of Tasmania” in and out of the heads. The one that particularly captured our attention was the Spirit of Tasmania, which, in the evening, departed Victoria looking like a luminary as it gracefully sailed through the tranquil waters under a clear sky.
Sagres comprises five bedrooms, including two opulent bedrooms on the upper floor, each boasting breathtaking views through floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows, making it a delightful choice for guests. We elected to keep the curtains open throughout the night to fully appreciate the vistas. Additionally, three spacious bedrooms are located on the lower level, accompanied by a large recreation room for children. The bathrooms are adorned with luxurious features, including premium products by Leif, towels by Quoin, and desirable Turkish bathrobes.
The exquisite entertainment area is located on the mid-level of the property, featuring an open kitchen and outdoor area designed for large gatherings. The ambiance proved perfect for celebrating a grandfather’s 75th birthday with six adults and eight grandchildren.
We opted to utilize the superb facilities at Sagres Queenscliff, such as the barbecue and modern kitchen equipment for our meal preparation. However, for those who prefer a more leisurely experience, there are options for in-house dining with private chefs and preferred caterers. Insider tip: make sure to arrange these services well in advance of your gathering.
As the evening passed, and with the children engaged in the recreation room downstairs, the adults retreated to the fireplace, enjoying well-deserved drinks from the chic, concealed bar area that efficiently utilizes space beneath the staircase.
After bathing the children—facilitated by the entertaining outdoor tub—we eagerly settled into bed, looking forward to experiencing the sunrise the next morning, which did not fail to impress.
