Article Overview
Should you find yourself navigating the beautiful landscapes of Iceland, be prepared for numerous unplanned stops to appreciate the stunning scenery and capture photographs.
Despite your best intentions, the allure of the breathtaking views is simply irresistible. This impulse ultimately caused our group of four to arrive later than expected at our subsequent destination following our horseback riding expedition at Hestheimar.
The final destination for the evening was, of course, a hotel, the distinguished Frost and Fire Hotel.
The Frost and Fire Hotel is renowned for its stunning natural surroundings and has capitalized on this enchanting setting.
It features an outdoor heated pool, several hot tubs adjacent to the river, and culinary offerings prepared using natural lava heat!
Upon our arrival, our focus was singular—food. Therefore, we swiftly settled into our rooms and made our way to the hotel restaurant.
The culinary experience was exceptional! We were all expressing our delight as we dined. I suspect we were the noisiest table with our enthusiastic remarks of “Mmmmm…”, “Delicious!” and “Saaaa-Gu” (which translates to “So Good!” with a mouthful of cake).
This meal was indicative of the superb Icelandic cuisine we had encountered thus far, and we indulged in each course available—accompanied by generous amounts of wine, of course! It was certainly well-deserved after our horse riding lessons that day!
Our meal commenced with a salmon appetizer, meticulously prepared by the chef. This truly set the tone for the evening!
This course was accompanied by freshly baked bread that we generously slathered with luscious Icelandic butter… (that butter is truly exceptional!).
Subsequently, we indulged in a dish of hot smoked goose served with brie and raspberries…
…and a creamy langoustine soup, Varmá special.
Following that, we enjoyed Bacalao complemented by butternut squash, olives, and a tomato- and herb-infused butter sauce selected for Lloyd and Georgia…
…along with lamb chops and a shank of lamb cooked in the hot spring, mini potatoes, and a sauce infused with Icelandic moss for Chris and myself.
Subsequently, Lloyd, Georgia, and I selected the carrot cake cooked in the hot spring paired with Icelandic moss ice cream…
…while Chris chose the chocolate-dream dessert, accompanied by vanilla ice cream and cream mascarpone.
After concluding our dining experience, we transitioned to the hot tubs, with plenty of wine, while enjoying the picturesque landscape and recapping our adventures in Iceland thus far.
It is worth mentioning that we did engage in some planning for the next day’s excursions; however, our focus largely shifted to enjoying the wine at that moment.
Our intention was to remain in the hot tubs briefly, but before we realized it, the clock showed 1:30 am.
Those hot tubs have a way of keeping one entranced! 🙂
The following day, we quickly indulged in breakfast as soon as we awoke before heading back to our rooms to prepare for the next segment of our journey.
One or more of us may have inadvertently dozed off after an indulgent breakfast featuring freshly prepared waffles, an assortment of fruits, cereals, artisanal breads, various meats, and cheeses.
In essence, if it was offered for breakfast, we eagerly consumed it!
After our naps, we reluctantly bid farewell to the Frost and Fire Hotel, albeit temporarily, as we intended to return soon after experiencing some remarkable attractions in Iceland. This included sightings of the Northern Lights, which will be elaborated upon in a future post.
