Experience the Luxury of Ras Al Khaimah at Waldorf Astoria
You’ve heard of Dubai, its dramatic skyscrapers, and over-the-top construction projects that race to out-achieve one another. And you’ve heard of Abu Dhabi, a cultural diamond with one of the world’s most beautiful mosques and the second outpost of the Louvre. However, chances are you’ve never heard of Ras Al Khaimah, one of the lesser-known of the UAE’s seven emirates, and a popular beach destination for locals and foreigners alike.
A little over an hour’s drive from Dubai—easily accessible from Europe and the rest of the world thanks to luxurious non-stop flights to Dubai on Emirates—Ras Al Khaimah is unassuming from the highway, past the jungle of glass mega-structures and into the wild desert where herds of camels lounge in the distance. It’s here, in this sandy abyss, that you’ll find the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah, an extravagant desert oasis tucked away with a pristine private beach, swimming pools, world-class restaurants, and one of the most gorgeous hotel lobbies you’ve ever seen.
Ras Al Khaimah is an exceptional destination for two types of travelers: those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of Dubai and those looking for an off-beat beach destination that offers more than just sun and sand. The Emirate also provides plenty of adventurous activities. Therefore, staying at the Waldorf Astoria ensures that everyone in your group will find activities that will keep them smiling.
An obvious draw is the turquoise water of the Arabian Sea. Families, from babies to grandparents, line the beaches, soaking up the warm Middle Eastern sun while influencers float nearby on unicorn floaties. While there are plenty of chairs available for sunbathing, the resort provides a myriad of water sports for those seeking a little more excitement. Rent a jet ski to get out on the water or go parasailing for a bird’s-eye view of the castle-like hotel. For family fun, consider deep sea fishing or piling onto a banana tube for some hearty laughter.
While the beach is enjoyable, no relaxing escape is complete without a visit to the spa—and the Waldorf’s is no exception. Designed with an underwater theme to complement the nearby sea, the spa offers 12 treatment rooms and a luxurious suite perfect for couples. The spa’s signature treatment, the Emerald, will have you wrapped in fresh seaweed while warm and cool stones work to create “perfect energy equilibrium.” Whatever treatment you choose, be sure to spend some quality time simply relaxing in the steam rooms and signature herbal sauna.
With 10 restaurants and bars, the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah has food for every palate, offering international options that you will likely find enticing. Umi provides guests with a taste of Japan, showcasing sushi and sashimi creations along with a Teppanyaki grill. For a traditional yet elegant Middle Eastern meal, dine at Marjan, located high above the beach with sweeping views of the sea. After dinner, head to Peacock Alley in the stunning hotel lobby for cocktails and live music from a magnificent white grand piano. Or, for a more vibrant atmosphere, visit Siddharta Lounge for live DJs, fresh cocktails, and a lively pool scene.
Adventure Awaits Beyond the Beach
Besides the luxury of the beach and resort, adventure activities in the area are a significant attraction for guests at the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah. The hotel can assist guests in joining a desert safari with Bedouin people and belly dancers under the stars, or renting dune buggies for off-roading adventures on sand dunes. For an elevated thrill, glide on the world’s longest zip line through the Hajar Mountains, culminating at the highest foot bridge in the UAE, precariously perched off the side of a cliff.
During my stay, I enjoyed the opportunity to take advantage of Waldorf Astoria’s partnership with Aston Martin, where guests can drive one of the powerful sports cars through the local streets and highways, either solo or with guidance. Cruising through the desert with the windows down in a vehicle designed for the rich and famous was an unforgettable experience. The powerful roar of the engine of my Aston Martin Vantage offered a unique thrill, far different from the everyday noise I’m used to. Notably, even if you don’t reach Ras Al Khaimah, Waldorf Astoria provides opportunities to drive Aston Martins at select dates around the world, including Shanghai and Las Vegas.
After a long day of swimming in the sea or pool, relaxing in the spa, savoring exquisite sushi, and driving a high-performance sports car, there’s nothing quite like a restful night in a comfortable room. Opt for a king deluxe room featuring a balcony and sea view, allowing you to watch the sunset while listening to the soothing sounds of waves below. When you finally retreat indoors, rest your head on plush down and feather pillows, drifting off to sleep with dreams of tomorrow’s adventures.
