Doctor Who, the iconic BBC-produced British sci-fi TV series, has captivated audiences since it first premiered in 1963, fostering a fan base that spans generations. To celebrate the passionate Whovians (as fans are known), a husband and wife team, Alexandra and Kevan Looseley-Saul, launched a vibrant shop and museum in East London in 1984. This destination showcases a treasure trove of show memorabilia, props, toys, and related merchandise.
The Who Shop is a paradise for Doctor Who enthusiasts, offering an extensive collection of items related to the beloved Time Lord. Visitors can expect to find an array of products including t-shirts, mugs, keychains, pins, and DVDs from each season. Moreover, the shop features exclusive memorabilia such as signed autographs from notable cast members like Tom Baker, who portrayed the fourth Doctor, and David Tennant, who is among the most beloved incarnations of the character.
Additionally, fans will find rare items like an original script for the 1986 BBC audio series, Doctor Who & “The Paradise of Death,” signed by key cast members. The inventory at The Who Shop also celebrates the Doctor Who universe’s broader scope, including merchandise from the spin-off series Torchwood.
The Doctor Who Museum
Accessing the museum is a unique experience, as it can only be entered from within The Who Shop. However, visitors may find themselves exploring the shop without spotting any traditional museum signage. To enter, fans must approach the cash register and request a museum ticket; once obtained, a key is provided, allowing access to a replica of the TARDIS. Inserting the key into the iconic telephone box door unlocks the entrance to the museum, which is entirely dedicated to celebrating the world of Doctor Who.
The museum is indeed larger on the inside. It occupies a single room, displaying over 120 props and costumes, with more items added regularly. While the majority of the collection hails from the Doctor Who TV series, there are also artifacts from Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and K9, tracing back to 1964. Furthermore, memorabilia from other TV shows, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Red Dwarf, can also be found.
Visitors are accompanied by knowledgeable guides, including either one of the owners or an expert team member. A significant highlight of the collection is the Console from the 1989 Doctor Who stage play, “The Ultimate Adventure.” The displays include original scripts and production paperwork. While some costumes and props are housed in glass cabinets, many items are accessible for closer viewing. Photography is encouraged, and the staff is happy to assist fans in capturing memorable moments with the exhibits.
