Summary
Final Hours in Sri Lanka
Following our departure from the intense heat in Kandy, we eagerly arrived at our subsequent destination which surprisingly turned out to be an indoor event. In hindsight, an outdoor setting could have been preferable; however, I was sincerely appreciative of the air conditioning. (Enough commentary on the heat…)
The Kandyan Dance Performance
The featured event presented was a traditional Sri Lankan Kandyan dance performance—named after its origin in Kandy, the city where we found ourselves.
Cultural Significance of the Performance
Each dance sequence is meticulously crafted to convey a specific narrative, with an explanation provided for each, ensuring that audiences do not have to infer the stories on their own.
The intricacies of the symbolic masks worn by the dancers became clearer as the masked performers took the stage, providing additional context and depth to their meaning.
Dinner and Concluding Thoughts
After an engaging evening at the performance, we were unexpectedly treated to a traditional Sri Lankan activity—fire walking!
This evening concluded with an intriguing twist, as we were unable to enjoy alcoholic beverages due to full moon regulations in the country. Instead, we savored an array of delightful meals, each more indulgent than the last.
The next day allowed for much-anticipated relaxation, a stark contrast to the preceding energetic itinerary. We reveled in a serene environment without the pressure of packed schedules.
The conclusion of our captivating journey was facilitated by an organized transfer to the airport. It had been a remarkable week in Sri Lanka, brimming with extraordinary experiences that validated our choices throughout the trip.
Ultimately, the journey culminated in an upgraded business class experience, courtesy of accumulated miles that provided a fitting end to an exceptional holiday across Madrid, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka.
