GILI MENO
The three Gili Islands are approximately a one-hour boat ride from the eastern coast of Bali and can also be accessed conveniently from Lombok through various speed boat services. Island hopping among the Gili Islands is feasible with local boats (departing twice daily), numerous speed boat options, or by chartering a private vessel.
Gili Trawangan is renowned for its vibrant party atmosphere, while Gili Meno and Gili Air are preferred by travelers seeking a tranquil island experience.
Karma Reef is situated on the middle island, Gili Meno. Having previously only ventured to Gili Trawangan, we were eager to discover its more serene counterpart, and our expectations were met.
With pristine sandy beaches, transparent waters, and vibrant coral reefs set against the backdrop of Lombok’s volcanoes, it is evident that we had arrived in an authentic island paradise!
LUXURIOUS SEA TENT
Initially, we could not envisage what it would be like to stay in a tent on a tropical island.
Reflecting on our experience, we wish there could be more establishments like Karma Reef! Not only do you fall asleep to the soothing sounds of waves crashing just 15 meters from your bed, but you also experience a modern interpretation of Robinson Crusoe, enjoying stunning night sky views and the opportunity to spot turtles from your porch!
Our sea tent featured all the luxurious amenities one could desire – air conditioning, wireless internet, hot showers, and an exceptionally comfortable king-size bed – providing a perfect blend of nature and luxury.
Awaken each morning on your spacious front porch overlooking your private beach while savoring coffee on your personal day bed swing (ideal for photos) or relaxing on your comfortable outdoor lounge area – a truly remarkable glamping experience!
BUNGALOWS
For those seeking a more traditional experience without sacrificing luxury, consider reserving one of the classic two-story island villas. These accommodations feature spacious king-size four-poster beds, outdoor showers, private balconies overlooking the sparkling ocean and neighboring islands of Gili Air and Lombok, along with a personal television and DVD home theater system. Relax in a hammock on your front porch and enjoy leisurely days by the sea. Trust us – you may never want to depart!
KARMA SEA SPA
An island retreat would be incomplete without a rejuvenating spa experience. The Karma Spa, located in one of the beachfront sea tents, provides a comprehensive selection of treatments. Ease your tired muscles after a day of snorkeling and kayaking with a traditional Balinese massage while enjoying the calming sounds of the waves and feeling the gentle sea breeze.
KITCHEN
Even though you are situated on a remote island, outstanding cuisine is readily available. Typically, we prefer to venture out and discover local dining options; however, we felt compelled to sample almost everything from Karma Reef’s menu and were distinctly impressed by the freshness and sophistication of each dish.
BREAKFAST
Select your preferred breakfast items from their delightful menu – including a vitamin-rich freshly squeezed orange juice – once you have chosen your seat at the bar overlooking the shimmering ocean or one of their tables in the garden, allowing your toes to sink into the soft sand.
LUNCH AND DINNER
Upon reviewing the lunch and dinner menu, you will undoubtedly struggle to narrow down your preferred selections. Commence your culinary journey with hummus and warm baked pita bread, paired with guacamole and nachos. Continue with the Chicken “Tagine” Casablanca, and return to island flavors with their signature Karma Chili Crabs from the barbecue. Conclude your epicurean experience with a glass of red wine and a European cheese platter – need we say more? Moreover, indulge in these exquisite dishes twice daily.
ISLAND LIFE
Every morning, we were greeted by the soothing sound of the waves and walked barefoot through Karma Reef’s beautifully maintained beachfront garden to the restaurant where breakfast was served.
While enjoying a delectable selection, we spotted the local marine life approaching the shore. Turtles eagerly surfaced close to the beach, prompting us to rush to the shoreline to greet them.
Following breakfast, we embarked on one of the resort’s glass-bottom sea kayaks to explore the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island. With snorkeling masks readily available, you can observe the underwater world directly from your kayak or cool off in the clear waters while discovering the vibrant coral reefs and their inhabitants at your leisure.
For those seeking additional activities beyond snorkeling, kayaking, and diving, a 30-minute run around the island offers breathtaking views of local restaurants, a turtle sanctuary, and secluded white-sandy beaches, providing stunning perspectives of Lombok and the nearby Gili islands.
