I’ve wanted to tell you about this bit for ages! As soon as it happened, I just wanted to share it. There’s one activity we’ve longed to experience—a whale watching trip. Although we tried multiple times in countries like Norway, Iceland, South Africa, and Canada, seeing whales often eluded us.
We spent hours on various expeditions, only to be treated to dolphin sightings instead. We jokingly began to refer to whales as mythical creatures, much like unicorns. However, on our recent Alaska trip with Celebrity Cruises, we participated in the Ben Fogle excursion which included whale watching, but I kept my expectations low.
As we boarded the shuttle in Juneau, I was reminded by our tour guide that today’s whale sighting was almost guaranteed. Though my scepticism lingered, I felt a surge of hope.
Within 30 minutes of departing, we spotted our first humpback whale, and it did not disappoint. The excitement in the air was palpable, and soon more whales began breaking the surface, surfacing dramatically with loud noises as they exhaled.
Exploration of Glaciers
After our exhilarating whale watching experience, our adventure continued as we sought out glaciers. The breathtaking views of the glacial formations were captivating, making their presence felt in the expansive landscape surrounding us.
The sheer size and age of the glaciers left me in awe. It’s remarkable how these massive ice structures have remained intact for hundreds of years, emphasizing the wonders of nature.
Observing the Northern Lights
As the day faded, the anticipation of potentially seeing the Northern Lights grew stronger. After dinner, I stayed awake with a cocktail in hand, hoping for a glimpse of this celestial wonder. At first, nothing unfolded, but just as I had settled in for the night, the lights began appearing in the sky.
I quickly dressed and made my way to the deck to immerse myself in this profound experience. The sight of the Northern Lights dancing across the sky was nothing short of magical, a fitting conclusion to an already unforgettable day.
This breathtaking display capped off what felt like a dream journey through icebergs, glaciers, and the majestic sighting of whales. Truly, it was a perfect culmination for an incredible experience in Alaska!
