Pulpit Rock in Norway is simply breathtaking and a must-visit for hiking enthusiasts. Towering an impressive 2,000 feet (610 meters) high, Preikestolen (or Pulpit Rock) is a trek that had always been on our bucket list while visiting Norway. The picturesque fjords, with their dramatic landscapes, stunning lakes, and charming villages, have long captured my imagination, making this place incredibly inviting.
Recently, we embarked on a thrilling adventure from beautiful Bergen to Flåm, enjoying the enchanting Flåmsbana train journey. I had thought this would quench my thirst for exploration, but it only fueled my desire to delve deeper into Norway’s natural beauty. Thankfully, our adventure to Pulpit Rock came soon after.
Pulpit Rock, Norway: How To Get There
The nearest airport to Pulpit Rock is in Stavanger, located in Rogaland County on Norway’s southwestern coast. Reaching the trailhead can be a bit tricky, but it’s manageable, particularly if you have a vehicle.
We drove from Stavanger and took a short 25-minute ferry ride to Tau, using this time to recharge with energy-boosting snacks and hot chocolate.
Pulpit Rock, Norway: The Climb
We began our ascent a bit later in the evening, which offered both advantages and drawbacks. On the positive side, the trail was noticeably quieter; upon reaching the top, we enjoyed having the entire “ledge” to ourselves. However, this timing did affect the lighting. By the time we reached the summit, dusk had set in. Thankfully, it didn’t get fully dark until around midnight, but it’s something to consider if you plan a late hike.
Pulpit Rock, Norway: Be Prepared
As we did on the ferry, ensure you pack plenty of high-energy, slow-releasing snacks. Consider taking nuts, bananas, and quick energy sources like granola bars to avoid fatigue. During colder months, it is essential to wear quality boots, a warm coat, and thermals. Additionally, be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, especially in snowy or rainy environments.
Pulpit Rock, Norway: What Does It Cost?
There’s no cost other than your determination to conquer Pulpit Rock and take in the breathtaking views of Lyse Fjord.
Pulpit Rock, Norway: Fitness Level
You don’t have to be an athlete to tackle Pulpit Rock; however, a bit of endurance, stamina, and determination are needed for the ascent, especially when fatigue sets in. A quick ten-minute warm-up before embarking on the hike can help prepare your muscles. During the hike, take numerous short breaks instead of one long break, aiming for reasons like reaching specific milestones to enjoy a snack or two along the way.
Once You Reach The Top
As with any hike, it is crucial to prioritize safety on the Preikestolen plateau, where there are no railings. Be cautious and keep an eye on the wind, as it can change suddenly at higher altitudes or near ravines. Above all, take time to savor the moment! The panoramic views from Pulpit Rock are truly spectacular. Relax and indulge in the beauty surrounding you—it’s an experience you won’t forget.
