Discovering Paris Beyond the Eiffel Tower
Having lived in Paris for over a decade, it’s surprising that my only experience ascending the Eiffel Tower occurred during a family visit. While the iconic structure is visually striking from afar, I prefer other less-traveled towers that offer unique perspectives of this historic city. Here are my top four recommendations for those looking to explore beyond the well-trodden paths.
Tour Saint-Jacques: A Recently-Renovated Masterpiece
For the first eight years in the city, I was perplexed by the towering scaffolding in the city center, believing it was a skyscraper yet to be completed. One day, however, I found a stunning tower, the Tour Saint-Jacques, unveiled from the scaffolding. This historic tower, a remnant of a 16th-century church, now offers visitors breathtaking views of Paris from the top since its reopening in 2013. If height is not a concern, the panoramic views from this tower are an absolute delight.
Tour Montparnasse: For Great Panoramic Views
While Tour Montparnasse might not win awards for aesthetics, it deserves a visit for its status as the tallest building in Paris. The panoramic views from the top of this skyscraper, which boasts 56 floors, are simply unforgettable. Visitors can also enjoy a delightful dining experience at the restaurant located on the premises. As you explore the vibrant Montparnasse area, don’t miss the chance to appreciate this architectural marvel paired with rich cultural history.
Tour Jean Sans Peur: A Curiously Overlooked Medieval Tower in Central Paris
In the fashionable Rue Montorgueil area, the often overlooked Tour Jean Sans Peur stands as a testament to medieval history. Known for its connection to the infamous Duke of Burgundy, “Fearless Jean,” this tower is the last remaining fortified medieval structure in Paris. Its historical significance, marked by a notorious murder in the 15th century, makes it a must-see for enthusiasts of history.
Grande Arche de la Défense: An Imposing Architectural Marvel
The Grande Arche de la Défense exemplifies modern architectural brilliance. Towering at 110 meters and completed in 1989, this monumental arch is a striking contrast to the historic Arc de Triomphe. It honors the bicentennial of the French Revolution and dominates the La Défense business district. The arch’s futuristic design is not only impressive from ground level, but it can also be viewed from miles away, showcasing a grand visual alignment alongside other Parisian landmarks.
Visiting the Top: Deck Re-Opens in April 2017
Despite its architectural marvel, substantial renovation efforts are currently underway due to identified structural challenges. Although the rooftop is presently closed, visitors can anticipate the reopening of the viewing deck on April 1st, 2017, as indicated by local municipal information.
