Sleepy Phatthalung is not the first destination people think of for a holiday in southern Thailand. However, during the pandemic, many found joy in exploring this hidden gem. My family and I decided to leave Bangkok for a road trip, veering away from the usual hotspots like Phuket and Krabi. We have since visited twice; my husband was enchanted by the blooming water lilies, while I delighted in the fresh fried fish meals. The “off-the-beaten-track” experience in Phatthalung is truly refreshing, where fishermen cast their giant nets each morning amidst the tranquil backdrop of nature.
Phatthalung is landlocked, bordered by Songkhla Lake, which is the largest lake in Thailand, stretching 80 meters and adorned with white and purple blooms in the early morning hours. Officially known as “Thale Noi,” this protected area is home to the largest water lotus “sea” in southern Thailand, hosting around 287 species of waterfowl.
