Summary
Departing from Burghausen Castle, we proceeded directly to Gstadt am Chiemsee, and I must admit that my entire mindset during the drive was predominantly focused on culinary delights.
Upon reaching our accommodation at Hotel ChiemseePanorama in Gstadt am Chiemsee, we immediately checked in and boarded a vessel destined for Herreninsel, the most expansive island in Lake Chiemsee. (In German, ‘see’ translates to ‘lake’ and ‘insel’ denotes ‘island’).
Herreninsel serves as an intriguing location – home to rare bat species native to the area (although we did not encounter any), wild deer, and one of the most magnificent palatial structures in Germany – Herrenchiemsee Palace. (I genuinely hold this sentiment with great significance—details to follow below).
Upon arrival at the island, we were exceedingly eager to refresh ourselves and therefore opted for a meal at the restaurant situated adjacent to the monastery.
I chose steak while my colleague had Spätzle, which subsequently induced a pang of envy as I sampled a taste of his meal—it became evident to me that I might hold a profound appreciation for Spätzle that I had not previously acknowledged.
After lunch, we set off in pursuit of Herrenchiemsee Palace, which required a leisurely 10 to 15-minute walk through the serene wooded area to reach.
King Ludwig II’s affinity for grandeur inspired him to emulate the Palace of Versailles in France, a magnificent structure that remains perpetually unfinished. Despite its incomplete state, its opulence is readily apparent throughout the sections completed.
The dining area features various intricate elements, notably one remarkable centerpiece: a stunning vase exhibiting flowers that initially appear lifelike but are crafted entirely of porcelain.
Arrival at Herreninsel
We encountered a delightful surprise during our exploration—a group of wild deer! Such sightings are rare, given their timid nature and tendency to avoid human interaction.
In conclusion, our visit to Herrenchiemsee Palace was indeed an awe-inspiring experience, one that we highly recommend to history and architecture enthusiasts. We look forward to the next destination on our Bavarian journey.
Dinner and Reflections
Once back at the hotel, we reflected on our day while dining at a local cafe, indulging in delicious refreshing beverages. Although the meals had mixed reviews, the dessert was absolutely delightful.
With the day coming to an end, we retired for the night, filled with memories from Herrenchiemsee Palace and excitement for the rest of our Bavarian adventures ahead.
