The McPike Mansion in Alton, Illinois, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of the renowned haunted places in one of the most haunted small towns in America. Consequently, some believers assert that members of the McPike family still linger around the vacant old house, and there are frequent reports of strange lights and apparitions seen in the windows. Although the house itself is closed to the public, tours of the grounds and cellar are offered monthly throughout most of the year, with increased frequency during October.

Four members of the Lemp family committed suicide, and two others passed away under mysterious circumstances. Jefferson Barracks in South St. Louis County served as a U.S Army post for 120 years, beginning in 1826. Presently, the old buildings of the post are managed by the St. Louis County Parks Department.
