There’s no shortage of adventure in Abu Dhabi. Whether it’s adrenaline-fueled water sports in the azure waters of the Gulf, a pedal-powered workout on the glistening pavement of the Corniche, or an exciting 4WD ride in the surrounding desert – action is a major part of the allure in the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
Well acquainted with it all is local thrill-seeker Hala Krunz – a graphic designer and social media influencer whose interests and lifestyle are as diverse as the city she calls home. By leading and experiencing a wide range of activities, she embodies the Abu Dhabi spirit of adventure.
Hala is the founder of the Rolleristas, a skating group whose mission is to spread joy on the city’s streets. We talked to her about the authentic Abu Dhabi, how it inspires her, and why there’s a deeper meaning in it all.
What’s the Vibe in Abu Dhabi Like?
It has a great balance of modernity and heritage. Being the capital of the UAE, it’s evident how well history is preserved here. The way the culture is honored is both meaningful and authentic. You can explore on a dhow and learn about the ages-old seafaring traditions – the world’s earliest-known pearl diving took place here.
What Else Can You Do to Get a Glimpse of What the City Has to Offer?
Go on a safari and experience the most stunning sand dunes in the country – they’re vibrant orange, flowing and silky. There are various parks and outdoor activities, whether you enjoy a long strip of beach along the Corniche, or kayaking among the natural beauty of the mangroves. You can enjoy the benefits of metropolitan life with shopping malls, restaurants, and nightlife, all while avoiding the congestion of a typical city.
You’re Super Active, What Inspired You to Start the Rolleristas?
I loved skating as a kid. However, when you’re young you don’t really think about why you enjoy it. You’re simply on wheels, going fast. When I picked it back up during the pandemic, I felt negative energy leaving my body, and one word emerged: freedom.
I adore shifting from side to side, twisting my legs around – it feels like dancing, with my curly hair whipping around in the wind. That inspired me to start Rolleristas because that’s what I feel when I skate. It’s freedom on wheels.
What Does the Rolleristas Community Mean to You?
I’m dedicated to spreading positive vibes and making people happy. When we skate together, the energy fills the atmosphere as we blast music and greet everyone we pass. We draw inspiration from each other, especially when we wear themed costumes. For instance, during carnival season, we sported whimsical headpieces with feathers and decorated our t-shirts. It’s about coming together as a community, expressing creativity, and blending it with physical fitness. Ultimately, having fun is paramount.
Finding Inspiration in Abu Dhabi
Everything I do holds a deeper meaning. Whether chasing adrenaline – I thrive on skydiving, bungee jumping, or any activity that delivers a rush – or finding peace in horseback riding on the beach. Initially, I didn’t have much interest in horses, but that changed the moment I connected with one and felt a profound connection to my surroundings.
Mindfulness enhances my appreciation for skating and every sport I engage in, including working out in the gym. I never participate solely to break a sweat; it’s crucial that each activity nurtures me mentally, not just physically.
Comparing Abu Dhabi to Other Major Cities
Life in Abu Dhabi is calm, simple, and uncomplicated. The city boasts a great mix of activities for everyone. Things are accessible, so you can reach your destination quickly – the traffic is manageable, and the bus service is very affordable and clean. Moreover, the friendliness of the people enhances the welcoming atmosphere.
Common Misconceptions About Abu Dhabi
Not everyone in Abu Dhabi is wealthy! However, life here creates a sense of luxury. What’s truly remarkable is that despite many experiences being affordable or complimentary, everything exudes a five-star quality. Even if you have limited finances, it’s possible to enjoy a beautiful lifestyle full of ease.
What Do You Love to Do When You’re Not Working?
The very first thing I do is go for a walk to the beach. It’s quite easy to access – you’re never too far from a beach in Abu Dhabi. Sometimes I meditate there or go for a run. If I’m hungry afterward, I adore visiting the traditional fish market, where you select your fish and they grill it for you on-site. It’s unbelievably fresh, simple, and delicious. Despite the luxury surrounding me, I cherish the simplicity of life – wearing whatever I like, lounging on the beach, and indulging messily in fresh fish.
Food Scene in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi boasts remarkable culinary diversity, offering cuisines from across the globe. What I eat often depends on my companions. I was born in Abu Dhabi, but my mother is Palestinian; during family gatherings on weekends, she prepares our traditional meals.
Many of my friends are expatriates from diverse backgrounds. For example, if I’m with my Colombian friend, we enjoy arepas; or acai bowls with my Brazilian friend. Our running coach is Moroccan, so we occasionally share Moroccan cuisine together.
Recharging After a Busy Day
Some days, I find myself out for 12 hours. Being super outgoing and upbeat – especially in social settings – I require time to recharge at home to regain my energy. I relish quiet moments with my family and my cats. Sometimes I just sleep, but I also indulge in guided meditations or use my singing bowl.
Returning Home to Abu Dhabi
Traveling is a significant part of my life. Once the plane touches down and I step out of the airport, I’m enveloped in warmth – not just from the weather, but from the energy of the place. The air fills my lungs with familiarity and comfort, making this truly feel like home.
